What are some good methods of stopping an aggressive dog?
I have 3 dogs and one of them gets aggressive when it comes to his toys. He steals toys from the other 2 dogs. He doesn't want to play with them, he just doesn't want them to have them. When they try to get their toys back, he gets in attack mode and goes at them. He is very gentle with people and with animals unless they have something he wants. I was awoken last night at 3:00 with this fighting going on over a damn toy. I felt so bad for my other dog who is still just a pup! Any advice???

3. Pretty often, at least 4 times a week. Plus he has a huge backyard
to run around in all day and night. We have a doggie door and he comes and goes in and out as he pleases. He was aggressive like this when he was 10 weeks old. He is now 3.

7. His brain needs stimulation and a Backyard isn't enough.
Watch the Dog Whisperer on Nat'l Geographic.

You need to make sure he is TIRED OUT TUCKERED OUT Exhausted every evening. Then when you bring him in to hang with the other dogs he'll be to tired to be aggressive and you can then begin the process of breaking his bad habits.

12. We try to wear them out b/c they can be rowdy
when they all play together. We play games with them in the back yard. My husband plays fetch with him for about 30 minutes everyday. It is non stop running.
I've had several dogs in my life, but this dog is so different. He is an ass just for the sake of being an ass. He bullies other dogs. He plays really rough. I love him a lot, but I am scared one day he will really injure one of my other dogs. I've already had to take my min pin (my child)to the vet after a fight. She thinks she can take him and obviously she can't; she will not back down. She had a puncture wound. I think they both think they are the alpha.

2. I watch the show The Dog Whisper on cable
He said something I never knew before. He said toys can make a dog territorial. Which for your one dog is true. Time to pick them all up. Problem solved.

4. That is a good idea, but I have a puppy who will chew up
my entire house if he doesn't have a toy to chew on. He has already chewed up a rug.

My friend and I decided I was a good candidate for the Dog Whisperer. But now that he has been on Oprah, he is probably in high demand.

10. You need to establish yourself as the alpha dog.. and yes, take the
toys away. Leave him chewies, the hard rawhide bones, but the toys are to be taken up if there is conflict.

And he must be walked for an hour a day, and you need to teach him tricks and behaviors.

A good solid walk with serious walking... not the stop n sniff variety.

13. The raw hides are way worse.
Anything the other dogs show interest in, he has to have.

5. Are they all fixed (spay/neuter)?
Sounds like a dominance/alpha issue. How long have you had all 3 dogs?

6. I've had my oldest for 6 years.
She is a min pin. The aggressive one, I've had for 3 years (he's adopted).I have a new pup that I've had for 1 month (he's adopted). They are all fixed except my new pup. He's not old enough just yet. The aggression did not start when I brought home the new pup, it has always been there. He is also part chow. Might have something to do with it.

14. Sometimes I really believe my min pin
needs it. She has major anxiety if she gets in a car. I mean major.

15. I used the book...
"Shepards of New Skete" when I was training my dobermans (one weighed over 100 lbs. - and I needed to be sure that he knew he 'wasn't' the boss).

I made sure that when we rough-housed - I turned him onto his back and in a friendly voice, reminded him I was the alpha.

Both dogs were conditioned to voice commands as well as silent hand commands. Again, because of their size, I felt it was important to have control of them. The second dog was about 3 when I got her from the pound - she and the pup learned at about the same speed so it shouldn't be a problem with your 3 year old. It does take your time though.

If there's a good trainer in your area, you might want to have a consult. I had a trainer work them once or twice a week when I was away long hours.

16. Thanks I'll check out that book.
A trainer may be the only answer. I know of a real good one, but he is pricey.

17. I forgot to add that he is a mix. He is a mix of Chow
and Australian Cattlehound. Both tend to be stubborn, somewhat aggressive breeds.

18. Is there a Chow rescue
group in your area? They might be an excellent resource for knowing how to tame the agressive behavior. I went through a rescue group to get my older dobie from the pound and they took her for a week to assess behaviors. Usually the members of these groups are very knowledgeable about their breeds.
