What's the difference in hourly wage from when you had your

first job and now?


In 1970: Bagboy $1.95/hr. Now: IT Consultant $75 - $125/Hr.

I don't have an hourly wage now. I'm a stay-home mom, though I do pick up some extra cash as a member of the scrapbook cult.

If only I could pick up some extra cash by SELLING A STORY.

Carvel Ice Cream, $3.35, I think this was in 1984 or so.
Now I am an attorney. I bill out at $300-$550 per hour.
I don't get that though, it all goes into the pockets of partners.

Do you get a straight salary then, regardless of your billable hours?

I get a base salary and a bonus. The bonus is based on billable hours, percent realized (what percentage of those hours are actually paid, which prevents people from billing 20 hours for writing a letter since no client will ever pay that), quality of work, client development (bringing in my own business) and some factors totally within my bosses' discretion.

Partners in large law firms do very well, which is why so many young lawyers strive to become partners. It acts like a pyramid with the young lawyers churning out the work and the partners getting the work from clients and passing it down to be completed.

I can't complain. I make a very good salary and I find the system rewards hard work and long hours.

She figures with the hours she works she makes about $2.00 an hour.

but this time of year working these long hours I feel worth lots less than that.

wage was $1 an hour. And that's what I earned -- $40 for a 40 hour week.
