Why Don't Long Movies Have Intermissions Anymore?

South Pacific has an intermission. The Sound of Music has an intermission.

Can you think of any others?

At least you can pause the DVD. Those cinema seats get pretty unconfortable after a couple of hours!

Without intermissions movie theaters can pack more movies in per screen per day, which allows for the potential for more ticket sales for the movie theater and the movie studios.

5. Lawrence of Arabia

Theaters hate long movies as it is because they mean less showings, less money. So I guess it really pisses them off to have a long movie and then add 10-15 minutes to the time.

Last movie I saw that could have used an intermission yet I am glad didn't was Magnolia. Would have broken the spell but it is just slightly over 3 hours long.

Saw Lawrence recently and thankfully they took a break.

But I also saw The Seven Samurai at the same (art) theater and that was 4 hours with no break. There isn't a seat in a theater in the world comfy enough for that. But still glad I saw the movie. :-)

I know what you mean about long movies today. Try drinking a Jumbo coke and sitting through a intermission-less "Titanic". :-)

It's the only modern movie I can think of with one. It was 4.5 hours long.

I don't know about the Magnificent Seven however.

Theaters don't like intermissions since they want to cram as many showings into one day as they can. Also in the days of the multi plexes they are absurdly paranoid about people sneaking into another theater and watching a movie (even half a movie) they didn't pay for.
