They're still not throwing flowers at us yet
"NAJAF, Iraq - Thousands of Shiites, many waving Islam's holy book over their heads, protested the U.S. presence in
Iraq on Friday after the detention of several supporters of a radical cleric, while Sunnis shut down places of worship elsewhere in a show of anger over alleged sectarian violence against the minority.

The U.S. military also launched what it said would be an aggressive investigation into how a British newspaper got pictures of an imprisoned Saddam Hussein clad only in his underwear, saying the photos violated military guidelines and possibly the Geneva convention on the humane treatment of prisoners.

The photos, which appeared on the front pages of the British tabloid Sun and the New York Post and were broadcast across the Middle East by some Arab satellite networks, were expected to fuel anti-American sentiment among supporters of the former dictator who are believed to be the driving force behind the country's insurgency."

We've had, what, over two years to have flowers thrown at us. Where are they?

I mean, we've got rid of that nasty old Saddam and lately had him parade around on the cover of some Murdoch papers... That should, at least, rate one Rhododendron, right?

Sunnis and Shiites are now on the same page in Iraq. Albeit, only the one that says that they're pissed off at us the same time. That's UNITY! That wouldn't have happened if we had not invaded. That should, at least, rate one Daisy, right?

Speaking of Shiites; they're now making up the biggest part of the National Assembly. Which means that the Iraqis, had an election. which means that they're now a democracy, which means that they're governing themselves, which means that there's no more reason our brave young boys and guys in uniform should be there. What? We're building permanent U.S. military bases to help out our friends in democratic Iraq? That should, at least, rate one Tulip, right?

When you're not counting the suicide bombs, mortar attacks, rocket attacks, masses killings and body dumpings, demonstrations, shootings, assassinations, detainings and general mayhem in Iraq, the Iraqis are having some of their best days ever. That's free air, uh... The Air of Freedom that they're breathing (Pay no attention to that tear gassy odor). That should, at least, rate one Violet, right?

After years and years of war and animosity, the Iraqis and the Iranians have basically kissed and made up. It was all Saddam's fault that blood was spilled between them and McDonald-Douglas built fighter planes fought in the skies above, both using satellite data delivered to Saddam, guaranteed by Rumsfeld himself and arms to the Iranians, courtesy of Ollie North. Bygones be bygones. That should, at least, rate one Rose, right?

With all of this love and understanding, it makes one wonder why returning troops aren't covered in so many colorful flowers. Instead grieving families are confronted by so many coffins containing their brave sons and daughters, covered by the Red, White and Blue.

2. Whoa! Did the US really just complain that showing Saddam's undies
violated the Geneva Conventions?

I mean, when did they start supporting the Geneva Conventions? Bush says they don't apply, now they do apply...

I read 1984 in 1984, and thought it was an extreme exageration. People believing one thing one day, and another the next, just because the government told them to... Now it doesn't seem like an exageration.

15. ...showing Saddam's undies violated the Geneva Conventions?

Oh, I needed a morbid laugh.

Considering every damn thing that's happened there since March 2003, they're worried about the tyrant's undies?

4. chimp has no control over the situation in Iraq
The colonization/steal the oil plan has failed. Given some time, the rebels will emerge victorious, it's the only possible outcome of this mess.

12. Damn that Newsweek
they've made them hate us for our freedoms through their irresponsible lies

If it weren't for Newsweek, freedom would be soaring like an eagle throughout the entire world.

13. From one who is learning to hate freedoms.
From time to time we see bald Eagles soar when we go to our farm in the Ozarks. Really magnificent birds. The mental imagery of that lemon sucking moran Ashcroft and his idiotic song popped into my head the last time I saw a bald Eagle. It completely ruined the experience.

Next time I see Bush "not Newsweek" I intend to mentally picture a Koran in the toilet. My hope is several million Muslims will do the same.

18. We are at war with Eastasia.. we have always been at war with Eastasia
The Geneva conventions don't apply when the US is verbally, physically and psychologically torturing prisoners...but when pics of Saddam in his tighty whities surface they do?

Orwell must be spinning in his grave right now.

21. The only US built planes in the war were bought by Iran before
in the early 70s.
The only actual military gear the US sold Iraq were some old Bell Helicopters, I think purchased in 1983. The US did in fact, loan Iraq some 6 Billion $$$ dollars, doubtless some of which was used to buy weaponry from the USSR in a very non-cold warrior move.
Most of the planes Iraq had were Soviet built Migs and French built Mirages.
As for Iran Contra, the actual amount of weaponry sold by the US was too negligible to have a real effect on the conflict.

If you wish to blame the conflict on someone other than Saddam Hussein, the answer is not the US. The Iranians started shelling Iraq more than 3 weeks before Saddam's invasion, and had been trying to start a revolution among the Shiites for almost a year. There had also been border clashes going back to the early 1970s, as well as Iranian support for a Kurdish uprising in 1975.
