Poll question: My dog eats cats
when they come onto our property (which is large and rather isolated).

Is my dog bad?

2. Bad Dog!
Baaaaaad Dog! Cats are not for eating. Besides, most of them will
put up enough of a fight that you may have some steep vet bills to pay.

3. my late wolf hybrid kept the property free of feral cats
however, unless they were sauteed with garlic and served with rice and beans she left them for the birds. She also kept our walnuts safe from squrrels. I did not encourage it , but she was chief of security.

4. Bad Doggie!
Edited on Sat May-21-05 02:27 PM by Cooley Hurd
I'm sorry, but domesticated animals shouldn't eat other domesticated animals. If this were in the wild, it would be another story, however your pet might just be eating someone else's pet. Needless to say, that's bad.

On edit: I have a dog, and I don't have a cat...

6. What makes you think they were domesticated?
Edited on Sat May-21-05 02:30 PM by cestpaspossible
Like I said, it is pretty isolated here. There's no indication that these three cats in 7 years were pets or had owners. And one actually climbed a 6 foot chain link fence to get inside the pen with the three dogs in it. (that was the first time)

7. Unless they were cougars, or another type of wildcat...
...they were domesticated at some point. Are you sure they weren't domesticated?

9. I'll ask again... are YOU sure they weren't domesticated?
Are you POSITIVE your dog didn't eat someone's pet?

If so, then I'll stand corrected...

10. I'm not sure of anything

and I never claimed to be. Also, I never had any intention of 'correcting' you about that, but about your obviously untrue claim that no cats exist that were never domesticated.

You must think I live in suburbia or something.

11. Well, then I stand by my statement...
Your dog shouldn't be eating possibly domesticated cats (okay, I amended my statement, ever-so-slightly...;))

13. Let approach it from another angle. What do you suggest?
Should I try to convince a friend who has a cat to drive all the way out here so I can try to train my dog not to attack her? Or what should I do? Or is it enough to just realize that my dog is 'bad'?

15. Unless you follow your dog around contsantly...
...or leash him (I'm not suggesting you do either - if you live in a remote area and your dog never leaves your property, then he should be allowed to roam), I don't see how you can prevent something that's instinctual. I'm really not trying to take you to task over this, but I wanted to give you my opinion about domesticated animals eating other domesticated animals. I just don't think it's cool...

16. Well I agree that that isn't cool.
But, again, although that may have happened, we don't know that it has happened.

14. My cat chased dogs.
:P

He was on our lawn to do his business and I opened the door to chase him away. My cat ran out and chased the dog away. He ran yelping for his mommy like a scared little repuke. Nobody messed with my Tigger. RIP, boy.

18. looks like a relative of my baby
sheba was wolf /st bernard/grt Dane- considered feral cats no better than rabbits/squirrels. (rural) the feral cats don't last long before they get hit on the highway- all the time.
