I think by then a lot of early 21st century American history will be examined in context of the worldwide peak in oil production. Even if we don't peak until the 2030's (which most mainstream sources predict), the effects then will be felt badly.
By then, historians and political analysts might have concluded that 9/11, the Iraq War, etc were all related to forsight of this issue.
Aisde from that, assuming that Democrats continue to hold a majority of Hispanic voters and huge margins of the African American vote, we're going to see a period in time where simple demography brings us into an extended period of power. I foresee this situation leading to IMMENSE frustration within the fundie community, especially as they lose control in the court system. And I actually fear some fringe fundie elements, with no other recourse, going to violence as their main option of "fightin' fer Gawwwdd!"
50 years.. wow.. there are so many other issues on the horizon that could be a total mindf!ck for those of us who have become accustomed to how life has been the the past 50 years. Imagine another great depression spurred-on by our debt. Or imagine the world, which has grown tired of the USA throwing its weight around, deciding to gang-up and cut our country down to size. Or nuclear attacks by terrorists. And population-resource overshoot. And what happens when our safety net programs begin to keel-over?
These are the first things that have come to my drunken, rambling mind. How horrible.
