So, sometime in the 16 years between Episodes III and IV
Edited on Sat May-21-05 11:04 PM by Rabrrrrrr
the Empire lost all sorts of cool droids, like the buzz droids and destroyer droids and shitloads of other ones;

space battles stopped being between thousands of ships at a time and were reduced to three, four, maybe five at a time, tops.

Space ships started projecting some kind of mostly but not entirely translucent "lightbox" around them, in a square shape, when they flew.

Animals and monsters and other creatures started moving more jerkily, and their mouths began moving less.

Jedi light saber battles slooooooweeeeddd wwwaaaaayyyyy ddddooooooowwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

And overall, the technology simply went backwards.

1. Progress is not inevitable.
See Bush II, Late Roman Empire, Islamic world after about 1450.

Also note that the Rebellion became more of a guerilla style army, fighting very few traditional battles. The Empire became incredibly spread out (which of course doesn't explain why after RotJ some ambitious Imperial general didn't marshall up the remaining Imperial army and crush the rebellion). Besides I think both of us at this point are thinking waaay too much.

5. Yes, I was thinking how perfectly it models what happens when
one tries to be an empire, or lets republicans be in charge.

Of course, for the movies, it's purely a matter of the time in which they were made. But that little serendipity works perfectly to further the cause that Lucas is setting out - that Shrubbie, or anyone with psychotic tendencies, if they get in charge of the government, will fuck everything, including progress.

The Empire puts all its resources into one giant humungo-weapon and ignores everything else.

Lucas is truly a prophet for our time.

4. That's funny
Apparently the same thing happened in the Star Trek Universe (between the time of Enterprise and TOS)

6. Lucas plans to re-release the whole thing in 3D.
I kid you not (see here:http://www.darkhorizons.com/news05/050318a.php)

This will give Lucas the opportunity to "improve" the CGI in IV-VI. I also expect to see some added scenes with Qui-Gon from Episode I, appearing as a spirit a la Obi Wan in TESB (hinted at by Yoda in Ep3).

With CGI, Lucas can remove all of the puppets from IV-VI and pretty easily drop in the graphic look from I-III. He's like a modern day GF Handel, adapting his works to suit new audiences...or not.

Can he just stop fucking with it already? People like the original trilogy. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just a product of it's time. The flaws are mostly charming.

It does not need updated, and it really sucks we can't even get a copy of the unfuckedwith version on DVD.

11. Well, one thing is for certain: The originals will NEVER be allowed out:

So guard your laserdisc THX editions with your life.

And, to me anyway, the 3 "D"'s stand for these: "Don't", "Damn", "Doorknob!".

And by the time "Return" makes it in 3D format in 2012, something new will come along that'll give him yet another empty orgasm to re-do episodes I-XII...

7. Blame it on the anti-science Fundies of the Evil Empire.
Scientific innovation, and maintaining technological achievement is not something to be expected from Evil Empires.

9. Sorry, if lucas had to wait 16 years b/c of prevailing technology...
he sucks rocks.

The old saber battles were COOL.

The new ones are for the sons of the MTV generation.

His great "vision" of an asinine amount of spacecraft blowing each other to bits; making noises in space while being able to turn on a dime in space... dumb. His prequel series is why he wanted to wait 16 years.

I am not impressed, though I will say it's likely very little had to be tweaked to change ep III from its purportedly original state to paralleling *co.

12. The Theory behind it is
The backward technology is a product of the oppressive nature of the Galactic Empire. They control everything so there are no independent worlds like Kamino, Geonosis, & Naboo developing technology. When a dictatorship is obsessed with it's military strength everything else falls to the wayside. The empire is focused on the Death Star, Star Destroyers and the Imperial Fleet. The Rebel Alliance had to scrounge up what they can and combine their strength to take on the Empire.
