Anyone here a Romaphile?
I'm doing research for a novel and could use a few experts. :)

1. Ancient Rome?
I can point you to some excellent source material and perhaps answer a few questions; what have you in mind?

2. Well
It's a romance novel, but I still like to have my stories grounded in fact as much as possible. This one will probably be set during the lifetime of Marcus Aurelius.

How familiar are you with:

slavery in the empire

charioteers

everyday life for common people

??

14. Jo-Ann Sheldon
is the author of the latest generalist everyday book, As the Romans Did 2e, Oxford UP. It's a reader and sourcebook with a healthy bibliography. I think that's a great place to start; it may give you enough info itself, but if not, it's full of sources for your own research.

3. I'm no expert, but I do love Steven Saylor's series of books
with Gordianus the Finder. I fell in love with the Anciet Rome after reading Saylor's series.

Plus, HBO has a series starting this fall that is set in Rome around 50 B.C. I'm looking forward to that.

8. If you've not read Steven Saylor, I do strongly recommend him--
he is the master of historically accurate depiction of everyday life in Rome in the span of time you're interested in writing about.

11. No, but I enjoyed seeing the Roman influence in England
when I was there recently. Particularly Bath. Our travel guides really stressed the Roman influence in London and surroundings.

12. I saw a bit of it when I was in France years ago, but I was more
keen on Gallic and Medieval items of interest then.
