Let's talk about punk music, shall we?
Specifically:

What modern punk bands should I be listening to right now?
and
What bands out there -- old or new -- are like Reagan Youth and/or The Dead Kennedys?

NEW ARYANS
Be proud that you're a white American
Blond hair, bule eyes - a fine new Aryan?
Supremacy's the white man's burden?

A final solution for all New Aryans...
Death to the Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan!
Anarchy in the fatherland!

Anarchy for all new aryans
No master race is gonna rule my land!

New order?
No order!
Disorder! ...Now!

2. A little bit
Also, I want to listen to angry politically-charged music right now. Reagan Youth and the DKs haven't lost much of their punch, IMO.

Plus, I think I asked, or intended to ask: what kind of political punk is out now that I should/could be listening to?

Not all of their songs are political, but certainly some are. New album The Woods is supposed to be their most experimental yet - I'm very interested!

7. Have you checked into Steve Earle's recent albums? >
Not punk, but politically charged. Angry, kick-ass and spot on.

5. I don't know of any bands
that sound like DK -old or new.

Reagan Youth were great, but you can find tons of old HC bands with similar sound if you look around.

8. The Subhmans (the Canadian ones)
Snag their Pissed Off (With Good Reason) and exult in a band that knew Bush and his fundie nazi crew was on the way 20 years before they arrived.

It's hard to find, and the orginal album, Incorrect Thoughts, is nearly impossible to get. But songs like Firing Squad, Let's Go Down to Hollywood (and Shoot People), Fuck You, Behind the Smile, Googleplex and so on could have been written yesterday.

Their lead singer is now the bass player in DOA. And their bass player did five years for blowing up a nuke plant in Toronto. Well, the electrical conversion plant next to the nuke plant, but it sounds better saying nuke plant. Sorta broke up the band.

And as a former rabid hater of Sum 41, I am dead serious about that.

21. Truly one of the greatest bands EVER
And you did have me snookered for a second, but I can always fall back on still being something of a newbie. A really slow and stupid newbie, maybe.......?

But at least I caught on quickly.

(strummer/jones)

The police walked in for jimmy jazz
I said, he ain’t here, but he sure went past
Oh, you’re looking for jimmy jazz

Sattamassagana for jimmy dread
Cut off his ears and chop off his head
Police came looking for jimmy jazz

So if you’re gonna take a message ’cross this town
Maybe put it down somewhere over the other side
See it gets to jimmy jazz

Don’t you bother me, not anymore
I can’t take this tale, oh, no more
It’s all around, jimmy jazz

J-a-zee zee j-a-zed zed
J-a-zed zed jimmy jazz
And then it sucks, he said, suck that!
So go look all around, you can try your luck, brother
And see what you found
But I guarantee that it ain’t your day
Chop! chop!

19. Anti-establishment Audio
Definitely Subhumans. I recommend EP/LP.

Circle Jerks, Minor Threat, X, Wire, etc...

The Descendents recently came out with an album called "Good to be You" which has some pretty decent political tracks on it.

Post-punk like Gang of Four is pretty good, if you're looking for rock with a leftist bent. Stereolab is interesting, as well, but they're not what one might consider "punk" at all. Although it is Death Metal, Napalm Death has some pretty strong anti-capitalist/anti-big business lyrics in songs like "Conservative Shithead"; their early albums like "Scum" were full of ten second songs entitled things like "Conform or Die".

I've also heard quite a few people recommend Propagandhi.

Nothing will trump Jello Biafra's warbling political commentary as the singer of DK, though.

Hope that helps.

20. Try some old school - Black Flag, X, The Damned.....
....The Dead Boys, The Minutemen, The Misfits, Fear, Violent Femmes, early Pixies, Sonic Youth.

And of course, the Clash.

The new school kids aren't really doing anything different or new. They're good at aping the old school stuff, but it's been a while since anyone did anything really original.
