I think there was one element of surprise in the Anakin-to-Darth transformation: The use of his fear of losing Padmé against him. We all knew he was going to be seduced by Palpatine, but not like this. Palpatine's evil was no mere cartoon formula. When he tells Vader that the loss of his own temper killed Padmé, we knew right then what a truly twisted fuck the senior Sith Lord is.

The ending moved me to tears, especially as Owen and Beru watched the twin sunsets with baby Luke. The way it evoked Luke in Episode IV was brilliant and touching. The best ending of all six movies.
