Tom Cruise gives unsolicited Scientological advice to Brooke Shields
http://www.salon.com/ent/col/fix/2005/05/23/mon/

Cruisin' for a … Tom Cruise talking trash about his buddy Brooke Shields? Well, yes. But only because he wants to help her. You see, Cruise tells "Access Hollywood" in an interview airing on Thursday, Shields really oughtn't to have taken the antidepressant Paxil to treat the debilitating post-partum depression she reveals in her memoir, "Down Came the Rain." Nope. Had the actress eschewed drugs in favor of vitamins, as Cruise's beloved Church of Scientology prescribes, the actor feels his friend would have been far better off. "When you talk about emotional, chemical imbalances in people, there is no science behind that. You can use vitamins to help a woman through those things," Cruise says, adding, "Here is a woman, and I care about Brooke Shields because I think she is an incredibly talented woman. You look at, where has her career gone?" ("Access Hollywood" via Lloyd Grove's Lowdown)

1. And mothers all over the world
scream in frustration.

I'm sure all Andrea Yates needed was a vitamin supplement.

2. tom cruise is acting like a wanna-be actress on a failed teevee series who
is desperate for ANY attention she can get, now that her career is over.

Tom, honestly, we don't give a flying crap what you think.

Your days as an action hero and romantic lead are over.

7. My daughter and I saw him....
he was acting like an obnoxious 13 year old. We both found it to be rather disturbing the way he was jumping around, pounding his fists on the ground, and practically wrestling with Oprah. Good grief!

11. glad i didn't watch and the whole thing with Katie is sooo middle school
the way he talks and acts kind of reminds me of giggly school girls talking about boys. and not in a serious sexual way but more of "omg he called me" .

Katie herself said she had a crush on him since she was a kid and i imagine for her that's what it mostly is. she gets to be with the popular guy she had a crush on and wants to show it off. i just wonder how long it will take for her to tire of it.

who would actually agree with Tom, sadly.

10. Not so much agree, but...
I think the real shame is that some people turn to drugs *first* in this country, which is what the pharmaceutical industry loves, and why they can hold so many sick people hostage.

Though, unlike Tom, I do believe that sometimes one needs the help of a pharmaceutical solution--for diabetes, for depression, for asthma (which I have), etc. I just think we should make sure that other solutions are also looked at (unless it's an emergency)--I definitely feel that we are a 'drug' society.

Hm. So I guess I don't really agree with Tom at all.

6. What an IDIOT!
He has been brainwashed by that cult of his. There is a LOT of science done on anti-depressants and how they work. Brain-dead moron. Not much of a friend either as someone with severe depression may kill themselves.

8. I think he snapped, poor thing. All he does now is talk about Katie and
Scientology.

It's like he's motor mouth all of a sudden. I don't get it. He didn't used to be like this.

9. Isn't it wonderful the way men love to give women health advice?
"You had a baby," they seem to say, "it's not like it was anything big, like the stuff we men do. Buck up and take your vitamins and you'll be all right."

12. Brooke can handle herself. Heard her interviewed by Terry Gross.
She was incredibly thoughtful and articulate, and is obviously a great mother, who struggles with balancing career and family.

How dare he say "where has her career gone?" One might ask the same of you, Tom.

13. Should an Ivy League graduate really take advice from the learning...
disabled?
Apparently, Cruise thinks so. Brainwashed, no-talent dipshit.

14. WAIT!!!! You know there are plenty of people with learning disabilities..
...who have gone far in this world, overcoming their learning disabilities, maybe even to attend an Ivy League School (ok, no George Bush jokes here - real people I'm talking about).

True, I give the smarts to Brooke Shields for recognizing the importance of an education, but let's not belittle those with learning disabilities like dyslexia. When diagnosed properly, there is no reason why a dyslexic shouldn't be able to get an Ivy League degree or get fucked up by some cult like Scientology

21. Actually, I work with the severely learning disabled....
and would never belittle them. It was just a rhetorical question :)

If Cruise wants to give all of his myeon to the chruhc of Ycsienologt, more power to them.

16. Then that f*cker can deal w/ postpartum depression!
It sucks. And many doctors don't listen to women about it. I had one doctor tell me that it was "baby blues" and I would get over it. It started about 2 weeks after I had my child and I couldn't get any help for 18 months. By then, I had let myself slip almost too far. It damaged my opportunities to bond better w/ my child. It damaged my self esteem. I didn't even want to get out of bed in the morning. Wellbutrin and then Lexapro is what helped me.
I tried vitamins at the urging of one doctor. He said that I was not getting enough vitamins and minerals in my diet. Guess what? That didn't work!
When Tom Cruise becomes a woman and gives birth then he can talk about whether vitamins helped his postpartum depression or not. Until then he needs to shut his damn mouth.
And Brooke Shields should be proud of herself for getting help. She should be proud of herself for going public. I hope that her story will help more women realize that "something isn't right here" and that they will pressure their doctors for help.
