Then someone said teachers and principals better not discipline our children when they misbehave. And the school administrators said no faculty member in this school better touch a student when they misbehave because we don't want any bad publicity, and we surely don't want to be sued.

It's always everyone else's fault except for the parents who pay no attention at all to their kids. I know that in this economy, everyone has to work a number of jobs (and that's a whole other thread in itself), but just a little bit of time means so much.

and go to the movies he and his friends have me drop them off at (I don't make them sit my me). I read the books he's reading in school and sit w/him - some of the time - when he's watching TV. I know I can't be there every second of every day (and he has surprised me some times) but I TRY. What more can we do than try?

WHAT God is not in schools? The Christian God certainly is, according to St. John, Chapter 14, verses 15 through 18: "15 ¶ If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 ¶ I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you." How, then, can these people DARE to say that God is not in school?

I can tell you that, federal law or not, Christianity is openly practiced in the public school system of Lincoln County, TN. To ensure that SBC Baptist prayer is still part of graduation, the high school now has a "baccalaureate" ceremony at a local church -- uh, totally unsponsored by the school, mind you -- so the kids can get prayed over. Then they hold graduation.

The boy who was shot in the parking lot here was shot over a girl...the most, um, fundamental of teenage emotional angsts. He was shot by a Christian who was a member of the football team...the shooter was an all-American kind of short-haired and squared-away kid.

It is unseemly to denigrate the dead young man's life and the anguish of his parents -- of this entire community -- by using them to advance a political agenda.

I can tell you for sure that if you are not a SBC Christian in Lincoln County, TN, in school or anywhere else, you had better keep your mouth shut or the fundies will bury you in a barrage of ignorant rhetoric...including the preachers themselves...and using Christ's name as they do it.

I speak from experience, being personally the subject of five WEEKS of Sunday sermons on radio at this time over a single letter to the editor of the local weekly paper that I wrote.

1) Stan asks for money to go to the movies. His mother doesn't even ask what movie he's going to, and if she did she wouldn't have cared what was in it. Terrance and Philip Asses of Fire? Yeah, that's a family film.

2) After the kids see the Terrance and Philip movie and learn all sorts of new words and concepts, the parents dump the task of teaching their children not to swear on the schools. The counselor devises a completely inadequate anti-cursing curriculum.

3) The inadequacy of said curriculum is displayed by the fact that ALL of the children went straight from school to the Terrance and Philip movie.

4) After Kenny's death at the hands of physicians who replace his heart with a baked potato, the parents have war declared on Canada, attempt to have T&P executed, let Satan and Saddam Hussein return to Earth...

You get the idea. What could have prevented all of this? Parenting! If Stan's mom would have looked at the movie ad and refused to give Stan the money to get into Asses of Fire, all of that would have been avoided. (It would also have been a four-minute movie, but that's beside the point.)
