Here we go... From Freepland:
McCain is not now nor was he ever a WAR HERO. He lost a number of aircraft and the last loss resulted in his capture. If getting captured constituted hero status, then how many WW l and ll would be considered heros.

20. Pilot Poppy bailed out killing his crewmates.
And why were news cameras there to shoot his rescue.
Ya think that Prescott had a hand in that?

about being a Senator that makes one lose their war hero status

18. Well, it's not so much the being senator as actually having seen combat
Nobody that's actually seen combat could possibly be a war hero. :)

They will rewrite history to suit their warped political views.

What a disgrace, to type into a plastic box for the whole world to see the libel that says a man who was physically tortured for years is not a war hero.

That has to be the lowest of the low, just an indication of how far they will stoop in their petty little worlds.

John McCain and I don't see eye to eye on a lot of issues, and he had a hand in fleecing middle class people of their retirements in the S&L scandal. But the man is a war hero, hands down, no doubt about it. I will never spit on his service simply because we have a political argument. How trashy!

Ooops! I forgot! The whole thing that got us into WWII was all made up! There were no death camps...no sex slave brothels, no attack at Pearl Harbor, no subs sinking U.S. merchant Marine ships off the East Coast...pardon me, I keep forgetting it was all a MIRAGE! You say thousands died? Prove it!

GEEZ, I get a bad taste in my mouth over these idiots.

15. McCain wasn't a "combat" hero like Kerry, however, he became a hero while
imprisoned when he refused to be sent back to the US (as a privileged son) ahead of other prisoners who had been locked up longer.

What would Bush have done?

These people are seriously warped if they can't understand the enormity of McCain's sacrifice AFTER he was imprisoned. They only believe what they WANT to believe, and no doubt see W as a hero pilot even though he was grounded in desperate FEAR of landing the jet after taxpayers paid a million dollars to train the loser.

17. New definition of "Republican war hero".
Edited on Tue May-24-05 01:28 PM by gordianot
War Hero; One who instigates and supports a war and never personally participates. If you ever served in the Military (people engaged in a war) it must never be in a combat role. One who advocates war as opposed to one who has ever served in any combat role. Avoidance of combat qualifies one for war hero status. War hero's may also wear uniforms as long as they are not enlisted or commissioned. To be considered a war hero you must also be a member of the Republican party. The only decorations regarding military must be shown as ribbons on your SUV, never ribbons or medals issued by any Military organization.

Prime examples of war hero:
George W. Bush
Dick Cheney
Rush Limbaugh
Bill O'Reilly
Almost entire Bush administration
on edit: Anyone who posts on Free Republic as long as they do not violate any part of this defintion.

Torture of War Hero: Whenever anyone questions your judgment, patriotism, or status as a war Hero.

22. New definition of traitor

Traitor: One who has served his country honorably and proudly. One
who has served in combat, been shot at, or has been a POW.
The above descriptions especially apply if one is a democrat
or is running for President against a chickenhawk war
monger.

21. I don't particularly care for McCain as a politician
but OMG! Who the f*ck do these assholes think they are? If I ever met him I will still shake his hand and thank him for his service to our country.
I read where they are writing him nasty letters now. I'm going to write a letter to him thanking him. Since I can't email him (they wouldn't let me because of residency) I will send it in the morning. And I hope that any vets out there will do the same thing. He doesn't deserve this level of harrassment from chickenhawk assholes!
(Sorry-I get a little wound up when someone starts dogging former POW's).

As to WWI and WWII vets who are considered heros because of their captured status: my grandfather was a POW in WWII. In the early 90's I had considered joining the Army. My grandfather drove me to an appointment w/ the recruiter one day (I had car trouble). We sat down and talked to the recruiter. When my grandfather told him of his service, he stood up and said (and I am giving an exact quote) "You risked your life for this country. Can I shake the hand of a hero?" The other recruiters came over and said similar things to him.
Now, if active military considers POW's to be heros, then who the f*ck are some chickenhawks to judge?!
