Who is the coolest white man alive?
With the passing of Johnny Cash, I think the coolest white man award has to go to willie Nelson.

8. I didn't know there was a title available
or that American country singers were even nominatable...if that's a word.

How about someone who is actually doing something in the world?

Other than singing that is. Sheesh!

71. Oh yuck, willie nelson?!?
:puke:

He's done a lot for the world? Like living as a very rich person for years, not paying his taxes for years and years, getting the IRS to reduce his tax bill so that he only had to pay about 20 cents on the dollar, but then having his "fans" raise money to pay that amount!

He's mooched off his fans for years, just like Wayne Newton and a few others like that did with the fed gov't.

I have no respect at all for people who have lived in the lap of luxury for years, don't pay what they owe, then have the fans that paid them in the first place pay for them again.

I would nominate Jimmy Carter - now HE'S done a lot for the world.

42. American Country Music
Developed from the musical traditions of the British Isles (generally the less-prosperous Celtic edges) & of West Africa. The slang usage of "cool" probably comes from a Yoruba word literally translated as "cool" (between hot & cold) but also carrying the other meanings. Anybody with a background in ethnomusicology & etymology should know this.

So, despite the wretched trash played on Country Radio stations, certain American Country musicians could definitely be considered "cool".

Uhm...yes...sure...well…maybe

To Americans not familiar with the quirks of German (and European) Showbiz:
There is an annual European event, the Grand Prix d' Eurovision de la Chanson (the European Pop/Folk contest) drawing huge numbers of viewers. It's probably the worst day to watch German TV, but it's popular. That brings me to the second worst day to watch German TV: the nomination/election of the German candidate(s) for the Grand Prix.
In the 90s the Germans had the habit of nominating the wackiest, strangest and arguably worst singer/one-hit-wonder available (they still nominate the worst singer; the wacky part has changed).

Enter: Guildo Horn.

A man with a receding hair (receded actually), orthopaedic socks and a taste for the German pastry "Nußecken" won the nomination with the Smash-Hit "Piep, Piep, Piep, Guildo hat Euch lieb" ("Piep, Piep, Piep, Guildo loves you") in 1998. (He was backed by a popular comedy show moderated by his songwriter).

Just happened to leech myself to your post. Bowie was openly bi for most of the late-sixties and early-mid seventies, going so far as to out himself in the Melody Maker in '72. That's cool. People say that he was a sexual tourist, but coming out helped a lot of people.
