SoCalDem I got permission to make boxes to send to our troops
One of the head Chefs at my College wants the details on what we need to do and how many boxes will be needed.

What kinds of food can we send (I know about the hot heat)?
How big should the boxes be?
How many are needed?
Is there a cut off date for Thanksgiving and Christmas?
Do they need any Kosher Boxes?
Where do we send them?

I need the info so that I can get this off of the ground in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

1. bravo!
Also, I have four boxes ready to go. Are there other kids
than the ones on the list that need someone? Especially
the girls and kids far out from supply?

4. Sending to sailors or soldiers?
If you are going to create kosher boxes, label them on the outside. I know the gift boxes we got were handed out semi-randomly.

Box shouldn't weigh more than 10 pounds, and probably 5 lbs.

Many-many are needed.

Send foods that will not spoil or smoosh. Canned, hard candies, and the like. Jerky is good, so are nuts. Bubble gum is fun.

For Thanksgiving, I would send now. For Christmas, immediately after Thanksgiving.

7. Checking in..
The only names we have are the ones I pm'ed you.. Solly Mack's husband is there, and if you want to wait a few days, maybe she will have some additional names for us..

Smallish boxes are fine.. athletic shoe box sized..

anything that does not perish easily and is not heat sensitive is fine..

the boxes must be addressed to a specific soldier..

other than that, I don't know what else to add..

on the other threds there are lists of many things that people have sent..

the guys are appreciative of just about anything.. whatever they receive is way better than the MRE's they have now :)

Thanks:)

8. I will take as many names as you want to give me
Edited on Tue Oct-28-03 04:04 AM by corarose
We toss out what we can't give to the shelters and I know the Chefs will let me come in and bake on my off days with the other students that want to help.

They are puzzled about what will keep in that heat.

Do you know If fruitcake would hold up. I like fruit cake and I know most people do not like it but, it would be better then nothing.

I want to locate some places and find out they would sell me some CD's dirt cheap. I know one of the soldiers got killed buying a CD.
We could put one in each box and it could be tunes that everyone likes but I don't know what that would be.

I don't have any kids and I would love to do this. I will use what I have left over on my Disability Check this month after I pay bills.

I can get some things pretty cheap at the Restaurant Store.

9. Baked goods with high moisture combines with heat will mold
that would be my only qualm about homemade baked goods.. The store bought cookies have preservatives and they are pretty dry.. The teachers there might know.

10. Croissants have too much butter in them but
Edited on Tue Oct-28-03 04:19 AM by corarose
They hold up longer then any other roll. But we need something sweet for them.

How about Oatmeal Cookies, Fruitcake without the liquor but then again the liquor might be something that would keep it preserved.

Also, If we use any nuts in the products I will have to put a warning sticker on them.

Tuiles & Shortbread are dry and they are good cookies.

11. Whatever yu send could take 2 weeks to get there
so just use that as the guide.. If it will keep, in extreme heat for 2 weeks, it will be ok :)
