Get Halo and Doom as computer games or buy an XBox?
I've been lusting after getting an Xbox to play the Halo series, along with the new Doom, but don't really want to shell out that much money to play those few games. There aren't really many other games I have interest in playing on the Xbox other than shoot-em-ups that are also available for the PC.

It would cost $150-200 for a new Xbox, while I could get a controller for my computer for $30. Game prices are the same between the two. My computer fulfills all the requirements for the games (an E-machine with 2.60 GHz, 40 GB hard drive, 512 mb RAM). Which route would you go with? Thanks.

1. I guess it depends if your computer is up to snuff to run the games...

if not, you may end up paying $150-200 to upgrade it if you go the pc route... I think doom 3 is pretty computer intensive. The minimum requirements are fine for some games, but for FPS's I think that there is quite a benifit to having hadware well above the minimum requirements...

8. At 1024x768, Doom3 is acceptable on my PC:
* Athlon 2100+ CPU (running at 2720+)
* nvidia nforce 2 DDR2 mobo
* 1GB RAM (2x512Mb modules)
* SB Audigy sound
* Nvidia Geforce 5900fx Ultra (o/c)
* SuSE Linux 9.3 Pro

Not as fast as Unreal Tournament 2004, but it grows on you.

Doom3 is best online, but a 1.5/1.0 down/up DSL connection is MINIMUM. (UT 2k4 needs 256k/256k down/up minimum.)

The XBOX 360 will be coming out in a few months...if you drop that kind of money on an old XBOX you might regret it when the new one comes out. I saw pictures of some of the games, and I know people say this every time a new console comes out, but the games look so real you'll be amazed.

3. Both Doom and Halo are way better on a powerful PC.
I only use my XBox to play team games with other people, like soccer or basketball.

5. Well,
while I could get a controller for my computer for $30.

First of all when you play a shooter on your PC you must use the mouse and keyboard!

Do you think leet gamers Fata1ity, Zero4, GitzZz, Destrukt et. al use a controller?

Hell no.

Keyboard and mouse on the PC.

Trust me.

Given a good graphics card, I imagine you might be set as far as having a quick enought PC.

6. Got a good machine? Always opt for PC.

FPS games were made to played on the PC w/ the keyboard/mouse setup. I don't understand why you'd want to buy a gamepad for an FPS. I only use my gamepads for sports titles or console action ports (like Prince of Persia or Psychonauts).

That said, if you have a decent PC, go the PC route. And as a previous poster mentioned, it's not the best time to buy a console since the next-gen consoles are about a year away (on another note, I'm not putting money down on a next-gen console until I see actual gameplay screens and video). I'm actually looking to sell my PS2 and games soon over at the local Game Exchange... getting rid of it while it's still worth something.

7. The X-Box does not have the "good games" library to draw from.
I kinda regret getting the x-box, it seems that the rival consoles have better gaming libraries. That could be a little of the grass is greener syndrome, but its how I feel
