Burka alert: xstian Taliban upset about Paris Hilton's hamburger ad
http://money.cnn.com/2005/05/24/news/newsmakers/carls_ad/?cnn=yes

"The ad, which has been running in major markets since last week, has drawn the ire of television watchdogs, including the Parents Television Council.

"This commercial is basically soft-core porn," said Melissa Caldwell, research director for the PTC. "The way she moves, the way she puts her finger in her mouth -- it's very suggestive and very titillating."

1. Duh, that's what the commercial is supposed to do.
And because Carl's wants to get the horndogs who will eat huge burgers like that, the commercial stars Paris "no discernable talent" Hilton.

5. No discernable talent?
I mean, no, I don't expect her to begin reciting Shakespeare, but how exactly can she hold onto that burger with one hand without it falling apart? I mean, that's talent! :-)

Don't forget, they said Tanya Roberts had no talent, too.

I'm upset too
I'm upset that someone thinks something that stupid will make me want to buy a hamburger. But knowing that Melissa Caldwell is tit-illated by it makes it sorta OK

7. I didn't even know there was a Carl's, Jr Burgers until this ad
So as advertising, it worked, no matter how stupid they think you are.

Then again, as a vegetarian, my new awareness doesn't help them any.

11. Their last ad was actually worse
They were the ones with the slogan, "If it doesn't get all over the place, it doesn't belong in your face." And their CEO is a certified homophobe, but that's beside the point, I guess.

14. Odd--I've heard that slogan before
But I don't remember the commercial or the restaurant. I guess they don't have them in Austin. I think I've seen them in Albuquerque, but I'm not sure.

I guess they decided the innuendo was too subtle and went straight for the gusto this time.

I don't really like commercials like that, but this one is so over-the-top gratuitous it's almost satire, and I love seeing moralists squirm.

10. Ha!
I know, I know;) But it's just bizarre to me; I guess in the world we're in I should should just go back to the old chestnut, "Why Ask Why?"..

12. Or at least
Why ask why when I don't really care?

I'm still horrified that people liked Steelye Dan and Ferris Buehler's Day Off, but I was so much more upset that Reagan was president I just let the others go.

9. She has money. Lots of it. People, for whatever reason, love people
who have money. Especially classless people who have money.

13. Somehow I don't think it's the money that's her big draw
She's attractive, she moves well, she has marketed herself brilliantly (remember the sex video that she was so "upset" about.)

There are other stars just as average, just as inexplicable. I don't see why she gets so much venom. I just change the channel.

Didn't Tawny Kitaen do those exact same moves in a Whitesnake video about 20 years ago? What's the big deal?

8. Is Melissa Caldwell worried that her husband would get a
boner watching a hamburger commercial or something? What a sack of uptight shit.

16. I hate to say it
But they might have a point this time. The term gratuitous leaps to mind. I thought the Hardees one had some humor to it, but this is just blatant pandering to 22 year old Maxim readers.

My magazine covers restaurant advertising, and we were originally going to run some frames from it, like we did with the Thickburger thing. But it is just such a CRAP commercial, we picked something else.

I'm no prude, but that one is plain out masturbation. Not to mention it has that dumb fuck in it. This really is the kind of garbage that makes the nutcases SURE they're right.

They harass someone like Howard Stern, but they let this stuff slide. And Glenn Beck. Stern may be offensive at times, but he has a LOT of redeeming social value. This is just crap.
