Magical Mystery Tour mystery...
Edited on Thu May-26-05 11:52 AM by SouthoftheBorderPaul
Okay, WITHOUT FRIGGIN' GOOGLING IT, listen to the song Magical Mystery Tour. Wait for the line, "That's an invitation." and "Take (make?) a reservation." Okay, is that John? That would be my first guess but couldn't that be Ringo or George too? Plus, Paul sings those lines later in the song in a higher voice but I don't think it's Paul the first time. I kinda pride myself on being able to identify who sang what but this one's a bit tough....

13. I just put it on ....
I had always assumed it was Paul. I think it is safe to say neither John or George were greatly pleased to be recording a cheap version of Sgt Pepper. ("Your Mother Should Know" was a sad copy of "When I'm 64") Strange album.

21. I feel completely the opposite
I think "Your Mother Should Know" is a fantastic song while "When I'm 64" has always been my least favorite track on Sgt. Pepper. (Although Lucy in the Sky is a close second.)

10. Yeah, I think it's John too
but it's so different from his regular singing style. Of course, Macca was probably chiming in on the intercom every 2 seconds saying, "John, it's an "INvitation" not "invitaTION." Oh and you were flat on "vit." And did I mention this is gonna be bigger than Pepper?

15. Sir George Martin once demonstrated how John could do Paul's voice
and vice versa.
That being said, I thought it was Paul on this track - although John could have written that part of the lyric.

18. I think they traded vocals on this song.
The whole last part ("The Magical Mystery Tour is coming to take you away/Coming to take you awaaaayyyy/The Magical Mystery Tour is dying to take you away/Dying to take you away, take you todaaaayyyy") is sung by Paul and John (maybe George too), though it sounds to me like their voices have been sped up a bit.

16. Sounds like John double-tracked to me.
Of course, near the end of the song (after the tempo has slowed down) John and Paul (George too, perhaps) sing "The Magical Mystery Tour is coming to take you away" in unison, so it could be more than one Beatle singing "That's an invitation/To make a reservation."

But it sounds like John singing that line to me, with Paul singing the same line an octave higher at another point in the song.

17. Sounds too unsure of itself to be John, in my view
Seems to me it's George, or Paul singing in an un-Paulish way.

20. That could be chalked up to two or more Beatles singing that line
in unison or poor double-tracking. Beatles songs are full of both, particularly the latter.

Besides, John was not the most "tuneful" singer in the world. He had a great voice but was often flat - not to the point of distraction but enough that it's noticeable.

22. It definitely could be John, but I hear it as George
Or maybe John had a pass at it and Paul said "no no no like this", sang it in John-fashion and was so enamored with the take he kept it.

:silly:

24. I had a couple of (friendly) debates years ago
on the BrianWilson.com message board regarding who sang what on two Beach Boys songs.

Another poster insisted that it was Brian singing "And on every day/You hear children chasin' ice cream carts" on "Add Some Music To Your Day." I insisted it was Al Jardine. I still think I'm right.

In still another instance, another poster insisted it was Brian singing the verses on "The Night Was So Young." I said it was Carl, slowed down. After listening to the song a couple of times, the poster came around to my point of view.

I bring this up only because I know you're a Beach Boys fan; sometimes it's damned near impossible to tell those guys apart.

On Love You some of the vocals are so weird and affected it took me a long time to identify the leads.

28. I remember, on the original Pet Sounds CD release,
Edited on Thu May-26-05 01:31 PM by elperromagico
the lead vocals on "I Know There's An Answer" (with the exception of the first line) were credited exclusively to Brian.

It was only when the Pet Sounds box set was released that I found out that it was Al singing the verses, not Brian. Al just sounds so damned much like Brian on that song that I never stopped to think "Hey, that's not Brian."

Even the Love You CD liner notes credit Brian with the lead vocal on "Mona." Of course, it isn't Brian; it's Dennis. Brian was in his "husky voice" stage at that point, so I can understand some of the confusion, but his voice was never as husky as Dennis's.

32. He did sing the prototype "Hang On To Your Ego"
But there's no way he could sing those notes as Al did in the album cut. I'm surprised the liner notes are that messed up.

33. Just a quickie recording session
Edited on Thu May-26-05 01:45 PM by elperromagico
designed to fill a quota while Brian worked on "Pet Sounds." Then somebody got the idea of overdubbing laughter and chatter.

Ouila. Instant party. Compared to the inventive things Brian was doing on the other Beach Boys records, "Party!" is a joke. But it's a funny joke.

31. Dean Torrance and Brian.
They're both singing the high part. Dennis can be heard on the "Beach Boys Party!" album making fun of Dean's flat singing, IIRC.

25. Are you familiar at all with the "All You Need Is Love" debate?
Some say it was John singing "She Loves You" at the end; others say it was Paul.

The webmaster of "What Goes On: The Beatles Anomalies Page" reached an interesting conclusion on that debate. I love that website; listening to Beatles records while reading it led me to hear things I had never noticed before - and I'm a Beatles nut with a pretty good set of ears.

37. Interesting. I had a similar argument with a friend over Anytime at All
I still maintain that every second "anytime at all" is Paul and not John. Weird, but the second one in every chorus sounds utterly Paulish.

I guess John had trouble hitting the notes. Odd - he had no trouble hitting those same notes seven years later on "Happy X-Mas (War Is Over)."

40. Paul had a really otherworldly scream-sing voice
It totally carries the otherwise shit song "The Night Before"--if you're trying to ape his voice, I think that's a good test case.

Well, you nailed my thought on that vocal. That's exactly what I think, ElPerro.

BTW, great screen name. How cool. My nickname used to be El Gato Volodor (the flying cat). The kitchen guys (mostly mexican) at Carrabba's used to call me that. The only nickname I ever gave myself and it actually stuck!

38. I just go by what my ears are telling me
and by what I know about Beatle recording techniques circa 1967. The Fabs (particularly John) were heavy into double-tracking from about 1963 on. And John was always obsessed with somehow "altering" his voice - though nobody but him was sure why, as he had a great voice.

El Gato Volodor, eh? That's cool. Good thing it wasn't El Gato Violador (the rapist cat) though. :silly:

23. Who knows what tape speed variations were at work here.
For example, John certainly didn't sound like John on "Strawberry Fields," because Sir George Martin had to alter the tape speed to get two different takes into the same key. It's anybody's guess (excepting Paul and Sir George) as to what was going on by the time of MMT!
