When you cold email someone asking for job advice that went to your school, what is the best way to approach them?

1. 4 STEPS.
1. Introduce yourself and let them know how you acquired their e-mail address.
2. Ask for what you want. (i.e. assistance with a job search)
3. Give a very short overview of qualifications. Mention your education level and any experience. Just a sentence or two.
4. Thank them for their time and consideration and give clear directions on how to communicate with you in the future.

Oh, and follow up if you haven't heard something. People get busy and sometimes need a gentle reminder.

2. Ok
I will do that. Should I explain why I am in Florida and what brought me here? Or should I leave the details of why I left my last position out?

3. I'd leave that out.
You don't want to write your life history. If you're using e-mail, shorter is better. If the person has questions, they can contact you.

Good luck! And remember, sometimes finding a suitable job takes a while. It was 2 years after graduation before I hooked on with the State of Texas, and another 8 before I finally found a position I REALLY liked. But, I've been here 11 years total, now. Oh yeah, I graduated from college during Bush I, the similarities are staggering in terms of finding a job.

I just want to pay the bills now. I need something, anything.
