What the hell does this mean?
"Bush vowed that the United States would not 'crater in the face of hardship,"

Crater? Is that some chimpspeak?

This is what dictionary.com says of 'crater':

A bowl-shaped depression at the mouth of a volcano or geyser.

1. Crater, buckle, collapse . . . .
Interchangeble terms. He's too dumb to come up with "crater" on his own. Must have heard it from Cheney.

3. In college, 'crater' meant to totally wipe out in an exam.

I think the general term is 'to reach a nadir', but that doesn't fit into the context of what Dumbo said.

5. Actually, we should WANT him to always speak off the cuff.
That is when he shows what he really is. Maybe, just maybe the masses will finally see him that way.

7. It's a price we have to pay, to defeat him.
Gaffes have ended more campaigns than anything else. This guy, unscripted, is a walking and talking gaffe!

8. Crater is fighter-pilot speak.
It means to drive your aircraft straight into the ground. To "auger in." To make a crater in the earth.
