I have questions about 'No Child Left Behind' and Military Recruitment...
Starting in the Fall of 2006 (hopefully) I am going to start teaching social studies in high school. I was wondering... the No Child Left Behind act has a provision where schools must provide student names, phone numbers, and addresses to the U.S. Military. Is there anyway that a school, administration, parent or student can keep their information private? How can give my students a "head's up" on military service without coming across as anti-military. (I do believe that the United States needs a strong military... I have never served, but more than one person has told me that recruiters gave them an unrealistic view of what military life is like... )

Also, what concerns should be addressed by me and the rest of the faculty and administration when recruiters come to my (future) campus?

Peace,

1. I haven't looked into it thoroughly but I believe that parents can go
into the school and inform the administration that they do not want their childrens name given out. As for the school as a whole the only way you can get out of it is if you basically give up all federal funds.

2. Yes, there is an "opt out" provision...
that parents can sign to stop the recruiters from getting the information.

They tend to be able to get it other ways, though, and the opt out is often more symbolic than anything else. Some schools have given them free rein to even walk into classrooms, although the teachers can then throw them out. There's no gurantee the rest of the school will be against the recruiters.

And, watch out for "Career Day," where they often have the glitziest booths.

3. You can opt out. Here's the link with info:

A google search with : opt out out no child recruiting
yields lots a results.
