JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A surfboard got loose from the roof of a sport utility vehicle and flew into the windshield of another motorist, killing an Atlantic Beach doctor, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Dr. Kenneth J. Vega, 43, suffered fatal head injuries on Memorial Day while following the vehicle carrying the board on Interstate 95, the highway patrol said. Vega, a gastroenterologist and associate professor of medicine at the University of Florida, died later at Shands Jacksonville hospital.
The SUV driver, Susan C. Lewis, 32, of Beaufort, S.C., also had a kayak strapped to her hood. FHP Lt. Bill Leeper said she faces a possible charge of failing to properly secure an object while driving.
"It's very important for individuals who transport items, particularly on the outside of their vehicle, to make sure they're strapped down securely where they don't come loose," Leeper said. "Because if they do, something like this happens."
