A friend of mine has a nice collection of Dia de los Muertos statuettes from Mexico. It's an interesting and misunderstood celebration.

It's not as macabre as we might like to paint it. I grew up in California. It's not all that exotic to me anymore.

Even growing up in Texas, I wasn't that aware. It's only been lately that I've come to understand its significance.

I'm an hour and a half away, but I mentioned this to my not so better half and was told "Do you think I'd ALLOW(wtf?!) you to go to some bar in Boston to meet up with a bunch of strange men (like it's even all men)?"

Actually, the last time I went to the DU gathering, I turned down a party at my friend's place on a lake to go to it. I explained to my friend, a guy (and ex-boyfriend from a couple of decades ago), where I was going, and he was pretty concerned, e.g worried, about it. He asked another friend of mine if she knew anything about it (and she didn't, which made matters worse). He also told my other friends at the party that I didn't go because I was going to a communist gathering with people from online! (I think the name of the bar freaked him out a bit.)

I didn't get it at all when he reacted that way, but my (female) friend who he had asked was also concerned. I told her it's a mixed group, meeting in the daytime--what's the problem? I guess it's the seamier side of meeting folks on the internet that gets most of the news/attention, so it just raises a red flag for some people. So in a way I can understand your husband's reaction, but using the word "allow" tells me that he crossed the line (and from your reaction, I'd guess not for the first time).
