Potheads blamed in Minnesota sign thefts

Hanging on someone's bedroom wall — maybe on a lot of bedroom walls — is a sign from southern Minnesota that says "420th Avenue'' or "420th Street.'' That might not mean anything to mom or dad, but to a stoner, it's far out.

Officials in Waseca, Le Sueur and Brown counties noticed a problem a few years ago. The signs marking rural roads as "420th Avenue,'' "420th Street'' and even "420th Lane'' were disappearing at an annoying rate.

"A lot of times they'd go up on a Friday and by Monday they'd be gone,'' said Brad Milbrath, chief deputy for the Waseca County sheriff's office.

It turns out that the number 420 carries a special significance in the marijuana subculture. The reasons are foggy, as one might expect, and urban legends abound.

Here in Mid Mo, we have two cities, Columbia and Jefferson City, that have streets named High. The signs have to be regularly replaced, and since High St. in Columbia is right in the middle of the student slum district, that particular sign has to be replaced on a veeerrrry regular basis. So much so that usually after the first couple of time it is ripped off, the city won't replace it until the University is out for the summer.

There was a High St in Marshall too.

There is the Bong Recreation Center... And that sign gets stolen often.

Named after the WW-2 Ace Pilot.

I'm glad he's not around now to see how his name has evolved!

We're too small up here to go by numbers, but "High" Street would be one to disappear. I have always wanted to steal two signs in my town, one has my first name and the other has my last name. Never had the nerve to do it though.

Named after a WWII flying ace. I heard they finally had to weld the sign to the post because the signs kept getting stolen.

I'm sure they'll sell them to you if you offer cash.

Was from a Dairy Queen where a friend worked in highschool which read: "Absolutely no personal checks accepted." Hung it over my bed. And Mom never asked me about it. But then, she always knew I had a weird sense of humor. ;)
