I don't know that coke was all he was into, but I'm reasonably sure he was experimenting with some drugs at one time.

Since he's so old now, he's decided to give up the hard drugs, which has left a void in his life?

P.S. I don't know why he's still angry, but he really wouldn't be himself if he wasn't. I think angry and introspective is who he is.
