"The Day The Earth Stood Still" is the greatest Sci-Fi movie ever made.
But you might be able to convince me otherwise. I am open-minded and particularly fond of "Aliens."

Ready? Start.

4. I dig Forbidden Planet too, both the best from the 1950s for sure
and ones I can watch again and again (unlike 99% of recent movies where once is enough for me).

7. Well hell, you're royalty!
Now THAT is a positive American experience. :)

I first saw it on NBC's "Monday Night At The Movies." I'm only guessing that it was maybe around 1963 when it came on TV?

Gort is my idol.

would hve to look up the date of release. But it really impressed me. My favorites were of course Gort as well as the boy, I really identified with him. You must remember too, it was the McCarthy era and it scared my parents so it scared me too.
On edit: I wasn't quite 5, I wasn't 5 until November. 1951. Wow!

Or the original "War of the Worlds." But it is an excellent movie.

19. The biggest problem I have with the movie is the fact that......
......Klaatu threatens to destroy the Earth unless we live in peace.

That doesn't seem very logical for a supposedly superior race of beings.

21. Wrong
He threatened to destroy the Earth if we brought our nuclear weapons into space and threatened other planets. He didn't care about the petty squabbles between countries on Earth.

13. All I can say is "Klaatu barada nikto" -- (What did that mean?)
Edited on Fri Jun-10-05 01:00 AM by Radio_Lady
Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal were so good together. It came out in 1951. I was 12 years old.

It's still #187 in the Top 250 Movies of all time at the Internet Movie Database:

http://www.us.imdb.com/title/tt0043456/combined

I did like the original "War of the Worlds" -- we'll see what the re-make (previewing this month) looks like.

I also thought "Invaders from Mars" was pretty exceptional -- at least to me when I was very young.

17. Good question.
I think "Klaatu barada nicto" advised Gort that Klaatu was injured, needed help, and that Helen needed to be protected, too.

20. And what about this?
When Klaatu goes back to the ship to arrange for the Earth to "stand still," he speaks these words:

"Emray Klaatu narruwak. Micro pu val barata luke dinsal inkaplis. Yabu tari axel bugettio berengi degas."

22. Actually, it was a really good movie.
But, I'm always amused at the people who refer to it as: "The story of Christ, in science-fiction terms."

Yeah, right!

23. I agree.
The Day The Earth Stood Still has absolutely nothing to do with Christ. That's just plain silly, except in the most tangential of imaginations metaphoric.

28. But there are religious references throughout the film....
....When Klaatu leaves the hospital he goes by the name of Mr. Carpenter( not too subtle!) And at the end of the movie he is killed, then resurrected.

I don't think the movie is an allegory, but the religious implications are hard to deny.

31. Those are not religious references
Klaatu is brought back to life temporarily by a robot, using what appears to be sonic technology. Klaatu does not rise from the dead due to some spiritual or godly powers. Klaatu vowed to return only to destroy the Earth. He was no savior.

Also, Carpenter is the name of the guy from whom Klaatu stole the clothes and suitcase. Carpenter did not allude to his "simple occupation." And Jesus was not a thief, either.

Sorry, it is just not there as you imagine.

34. Like I said, I don't think the movie is an allegory.......
Edited on Fri Jun-10-05 02:52 AM by General Zod
......but I, like alot of other people, see some parallel between Christ/Klaatu. Now was this an intended subtext of the movie? I don't think so. But it's not a stretch to see the religious references.

If you don't agree, that's fine. But I wouldn't dismiss them outright.

30. I must agree.
Robert Wise was a great director with a wide repertoire.

The Day the Earth Stood Still is also my favorite SciFi movie of all times. Klaatu is decidedly not an allegory for Christ. In order to see where Wise was going with this you should read Harry Bates' Farewell to the Master, the short story on which the movie was based. Bates was the original editor for the pulp Astounding Stories. The short story is available on-line (just Google it).

Another point. It is not Klaatu but the robot police force to whom the other planets have given total control who would be the agents of retribution. Gort is the one in control, not Klaatu. It's a subtle distinction in the movie and it's difficult to catch, but the short story makes this clear.

I hope Hollywood never remakes this classic. The original still works very, very well, even in the 21st century.
