I am freaking out! Hope someone can give me an answer
that doesn't freak me out even more.

I was sitting out on my balcony just now (third and top level of an apartment building) - for some reason, I looked up, and I noticed this big, reddish blob (for lack of a better term) over my head. It is dark out, so I could not gauge the distance - I have no idea how far above me it was. It was a large area that was reddish in color, and there were distinct edges to it. I watched it for a minute, not sure whether my eyes were playing tricks on me, or what, and I saw that it was moving. It seemed to be coming from behind the building (over the roof), and it was definitely moving as one mass, but it seemed smoke-like, not solid...

I ran all the way down the stairs and out the front door of the building, and I could not see it from the ground. I went back upstairs and out on my balcony, again, and all I could see was what looked like the back edge of it. It had moved completely over the building and out of sight.

I have never seen anything like this - does anyone have any idea what it could have been? I live in one of the little suburbian towns outside of Lansing, Michigan, where there is a large GM plant. I'm having frightening thoughts.

:scared:

1. I would guess that it is the Northern Lights.
Keep watching and relax. Enjoy the show.

2. I was hoping for something like that...
In fact, the Northern Lights crossed my mind. I thought I heard something yesterday about them...

Anyway, it is back, and it is huge, but in the distance, now, and I can see it very clearly.

I feel much better. :)

3. I think something is going on with solar flares right now
that makes the Northern Lights visible where they weren't before.

4. Correct!
The northern lights are widespread and especially active due to the solar flare.

5. Yes, that's what I heard yesterday.
I lived in Northern Michigan for many years, and I have seen them once before, but I was young and don't remember it well.

Now that I'm not freaking out, anymore - I'm pretty excited!

9. Could be the solar activity is making clouds differently colored.
I've never seen auroras act like that but you never know.
:) Don't worry, honey. It's probably just from the solar
flares.

10. The Blob is in southern VA!
Thank God you posted this, I thought I was going crazy! Most of the way home from work I saw this huge reddish blob in the sky and couldn't imagine what it could be.

12. Beware of the Blob!
It creeps, and leaps, and glides and slides,
across the floor, right through the door
and all around the wall.
A splotch, a blotch,
be careful of The Blob!

11. It looked like that here in Indiana a few years back.
We had never seen it before either - there was a lot of speculation going around.

13. Of course, space aliens would wait until a solar flare
to embark on their invasion, since they know that we'll all see the spaceships and say, "Oh, it's just norhtern lights from the solar flare", and then they'll easily take us over and attach us to cows to milk us for nutrients and all of humanity will exist for countless untold eons as the unwilling food-slaves of a superior and altogether evil species and the cosmos shall never remember we existed.
