On CNN now a discussion on depression and suicide
Edited on Sun Jun-12-05 08:40 PM by Swede
Dick Cavett just said "people always think suicide is aimed at someone,it's not,it's just an end to suffering. It's better than life."

Napping, drinking is huge part of depression.

1. Dick Cavett is correct. For some the pain to stay is greater than
the pain it takes to go. My brother struggled with feelings of self loathing and depression. On July 17, 2001 he was found dead of an overdose of Elavil.

Depression left untreated is as deadly as heart disease.

Depression is not feeling sorry for oneself it is a DISEASE!

2. Oh Ikojo that is so sad.
Jane Pauley just said when people say "just get over it" it makes you feel worse, because they just don't understand this pain.

4. Too many people think that all depressed people need is a
swift kick in the pants....

Would you tell a person with heart disease to ONLY lose weight and avoid seeing a doctor?

Medication is fine for getting people out of the despair that depression brings but only talk therapy can provide the person with the tools necessary to change the "tape loops" that run through your head. I know! It took many years of talk therapy before I could see myself as an intelligent person. For the longest time I thought I was stupid.

6. And I think before people take medication for depression ...
they need to figure out within themselves and what exactly is making them depressed . For me , I realized that I was not living my life for me and relying too much on others to stay as one .

7. You obviously had the tools to do a self
inventory and analysis. My brother did not have those tools. He is one of those who would have benefitted from medication in conjunction with talk therapy. Of course one must be open to therapy because it is painful but oh so rewarding in the end.

8. I was forced to do a self inventory and analysis .
I moved to a foreign country where I did not yet know the language so there for the only thing familiar to me , was I . I just started paying attention to myself more . It was a natural thing . Its not to say that I still don't have depressing thoughts and I hate having those . But * sigh * I am leaning more and more towards meds because it takes too much time away from life ( being depressed that is ) .

5. Exactly .
Whenever somebody told me to " just get over it " , I felt worse and worse . It was as if the person thought I was pretending and faking . And this made me feel really rejected .

3. Thanks for that
I just missed it, but it'll be repeated later. I have a friend who is struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts, and I'm sort of the one holding them together. Much of it is situational, but nonetheless, it isn't any easier.
