I am reading Poe tonight
I just looooooove Halloween and anything even remotely related to it. I have the complete prose and poetry of Poe from the Library Of America. Beautiful hand-sewn binding, acid-free paper, and a cloth cover. What is cool about the LOA is that their books come in 4 colors: deep blue, green, tan, and a dark red. As it should be, the Poe is the red, not unlike blood.

Going to re-read "The Telltale Heart" and "The Cask Of Amontillado" now... :-)

1. Poe was the only author...
...that really grabbed my attention in high school literature classes. I wish I had an anthology of his on hand tonight.

2. Once upon a midnight dreary
While I pondered weak and weary

There came a knock upon my door....

Does it surprise anyone that I used to be able to do the Raven from memory?

11. FOR THE MOST WILD,
Edited on Fri Oct-31-03 12:14 AM by Diogenes2
yet most homely narrative which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit belief. Mad indeed would I be to expect it, in a case where my very senses reject their own evidence. Yet, mad I am not--& very surely I do not dream. ==THE BLACK CAT

14. Yeah Baby... 'The Black Cat', One Of My Faves !!!
Also 'The Masque Of The Red Death', and for hauntingly beautiful, 'Annabell Lee'.

'The Conqueror Worm' fits into our current condition rather nicely, don't you think???

12. Here's one for the hallows.
Not the raven, but:

Spirits of the Dead

Thy soul shall find itself alone
'Mid dark thoughts of the grey tomb-stone;
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy.
Be silent in that solitude,
Which is not loneliness- for then
The spirits of the dead, who stood
In life before thee, are again
In death around thee, and their will
Shall overshadow thee; be still.
The night, though clear, shall frown,
And the stars shall not look down
From their high thrones in the Heaven
With light like hope to mortals given,
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever.
Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish,
Now are visions ne'er to vanish;
From thy spirit shall they pass
No more, like dew-drop from the grass.
The breeze, the breath of God, is still,
And the mist upon the hill
Shadowy, shadowy, yet unbroken,
Is a symbol and a token.
How it hangs upon the trees,
A mystery of mysteries!

I have a bunch of Library of America volumes, but not Poe. As a matter of fact, I can't find any Poe around the place; I got up to get it when I read this thread, and it has walked away. That means I have to go after my son to get it back. It's funny how some of my books and music move to the other room....
