Answer: Because women, especially Catholic school-girls, were not self-empowered enough to do it.

This is just one example of how far womens' lib has come. Do you realize that November 1st is Sadie Hawkins Day? That kind of patriarchal celebration would never enjoy widespread popularity today like it did in the 40s & 50s.
