It's Robert Pollard's birthday. Favorite Guided by Voices songs?
I know we got us some GbV hot freaks out there! In obseravtion of Halloween, the upcoming release of the GbV box set, and simply for the hell of it, Let's say Happy Birthday to Bob, and make a list of our favorite Guided by Voices songs....

1. Your Name is Wild
2. Kicker of Elves
3. Dust Devils
4. Dirty Water
5. Where I Come From
6. Chance to Buy an Island
7. The Brides have Hit Glass
8. Not Behind the Fighter Jet
9. (I'll Name You) The Flame That Cries
10. Echoes Myron

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB! My guess is that he'll get drunk tonight ("No!?" I can hear you say...)

1. A Portrait Destroyed by Fire
I really like Bob's song on the Anyway Records comp (I Stayed Up All Night Listening to Records) -- I think it's called "As Long as a Block Is Black." Tobin Sprout also had a killer song on that disc, "Cryptic Shapes."

11. It came out around '98 or so...
http://www.anyway-records.com/

Anyway is run by Bela Koe-Krampescherrrr (I can't spell his name), who formerly worked at the world's greatest record store, Used Kids Records in Columbus, OH. Most of the disc is Ohio artists (Pollard & Sprout, Don Howland, Mike Rep, Ron House, members of Moviola), but it does throw in Californian Franklin Bruno (from Nothing Painted Blue) and Pittsbughian Karl Hendricks for good measure. It's probably my all-time favorite compilation album -- with the possible exception of the original
"Nuggets."

14. Wow, I'll have to keep my eyes out for that one...
Nothing Painted Blue somehow managed to finagle themselves into the Ohio Indie scene, they're on a Scat recs comp I have from 95 too. I wonder what the connection is (I never liked them, too dorky-sounding for me)? Btw, if you like them, Jenny Toomey just released a whole album of Franklin Bruno songs...(as a side note, anybody know whatever happened to the Mommyheads?)

Anything with Ron House and Bob Pollard on it is essential, though!

6. And while we're at it...
Let's get a petition together to make sure Bob's name is on top of the list for Liver Transplant Recipients! It'd be a shame if he we're to die early like Bon Scott or Brendan Behan, etc.

16. I saw Bob + Cobra Verde do "Teenage FBI" live in 97...
I immediately said to myself, Jesus, that's like the greatest song ever! The version on "Do the Collapse" was a little too synthy for my tastes though.....

15. Happy Birthday, Bob!
Here's my list, in no special order:

Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory
Game of Pricks
Jar of Cardinals
June Salutes You!
Shocker in Gloomtown
Official Iron Man Rally Song
Your Name is Wild
Gold Star for Robot Boy
Beekeeper Seeks Ruth
Kicker of Elves

Oh, and I've come to believe that Bob's been on one long, continuous drunk since sometime in the '90s. But maybe he'll get *extra* drunk for his birthday ;-).

17. I hear that sometimes he likes to finish off his beer binges with another
beer. It's like dessert!

Hi Binaryline! How did that mix CD for your niece turn out?

18. I hear that gbv has a rider attached to their
contract stating that they must have 5 cases of beer per show. But that could just be more "gbv are a bunch o' drunks" propaganda ;-).

The mix turned out really well. She's since demanded more le tigre and Sleater-Kinney, so *woo-hoo*! I'm really enjoying shaping/warping her young, impressionable mind with my music.

You know, it's weird that you started this thread, 'cause I had planned on pm-ing you with the addy of that gbv shoutcast station that I once told you about. We must be on the same wavelength today or something.

20. Actually, the new rumor going around is....
that all that beer they supposedly drink is actually water; the roadies find a bunch of empty bottles and fill em up before the show, and Nobody actually gets drunk. Swear to god, somebody really told me that recently....

That's cool about the mix. Anyday you have a young person asking for more Sleater-Kinney is a day to rejoice, IMHO. Indoctrination: exactly what the right wing has been warning us about!

Hey, if you still want to PM me with that link, I'd really appreciate it! I tried googling for it and couldn't find it.
