Back in the day, Led Zeppelin were known to be fiercely protective of their copyrights. Their road crew had instructions to locate and rough up bootleggers in their audiences, and destroy the tapes.

Then there was the "Stairway to Gilligan's Island" case, when an indie band called Little Roger and the Goosebumps released a single where they sang the words to the Gilligan's Island theme song over the Stairway chord changes. Zeppelin sued and made them take their record off the market. (I forget whether they had to surrender the master tape too, but I assume so.) The song is also intermittently available on the Internet, and I think it's totally charming.

I was thinking about Led Zeppelin this morning. I used to play in a group called Cul de Sac, and I jumped-or-was-pushed because the guy who runs the band is an abusive asshole. The drummer (who also plays with me in Tim Mungenast's band) just quit for the same reason, and we all congratulated him on his wisdom. But I was thinking about how much latitude we allow our creative geniuses. Based on his behavior, as opposed to his music, Jimmy Page should be an object of contempt (especially since he hasn't made a decent record since Zeppelin).
