1. Funny thing, if I fall asleep face-down, in the pillow,
I usually have a nightmare. Maybe it's the lack of oxygen or something. That's usually the only time, because I wake up with my face in the pillow when it happens.

3. Heheheh...reminds me of a dream I had
Where there was this mangled, vegetative beast sitting in front of me, all disfigured and making the most horrid gluttural noises, sort of like "Unghgehhhghhhh." It sounded like Marlon Brando having a fit. As I drifted to consciousness, I realized it was my wife's snoring. :D She thought it was funny.

I suppose it was because I joined the VFW last night and handled my orders and DD-214.

6. I haven't had a nightmare in many years...
...but my ex-spouse had MAJOR nightmares, often several times a night. It was an UNUSUAL night that she did not awake screaming at least once.

8. Yes I have them
I also have recurring ones.
I have a recurrent one that involves those ugly plant hooks on the ceiling. I have had those all my life and I have no idea why.
The theme would be the same but the dream would be different. For example I could have one where I look up on the ceiling and I see one and it begins to grow and grow and then it starts hissing. Also some of these dreams involve these damn hooks chasing me or becoming evil-demoned possesed and hissing.

10. That's certainly odd. My recurring one has been...
of being back in VietNam. I wake up to see nothing left of the buildings on the base. I'm flat on my back with no clothing, no weapons, and I can see the enemy crawling through the wire. It's not a dream to inspire confidence.

Did you go into counseling afterwards?

15. Thank you. There are a number of vets on DU...
Contrary to what some republicans and conservatives will try to tell you a large portion of vets and active duty military are liberals and democrats.
We didn't "do" counseling back then, unless you were "crazy" or very "disturbed." I think that's one of the reasons so many of us have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder now. I go once a week to our local Veteran's Administration Clinic for group sessions. The sessions seem to depress me even further so far.

16. Well,
I always thought that the vets were Republican lol, thanks for educating me. As for the groups, if you find that they aren't being that productive maybe you could spring for individual counseling then? It's just a suggestion, I don't want to force anyone to do what they don't want.

17. I have had individual counseling before, but...
not specifically for the PTSD. It hasn't helped much for other issues either. I'm beginning to think it's because I'm obsessive/compulsive about things. That applies to how my children were raised, my career, and to worrying when I couldn't control everything.

19. i love dreaming of (nearly) any kind
some i like to dream... some i like to wake up from.

But mostly when it's surreal i manage to take control of it. Which is especially easy if it's a follow up dream. Gotta train that tough.

the only kind of dream/nightmare that annoy me

the real vicious ones are when you dream you stood up and go to work when in real your still snoring to the pillow.

or

on the other hand dreaming you are far too late and wake up and look at the clock and see i am 2 hours to early and have extra time to take a coffee at the cafeteria at my local baker.

but apart from those i love dreaming/nightmaring. weird dreams, philosophic dreams and now and seldomly a prophetic one.

Edited on Sat Jun-25-05 09:47 PM by graywarrior
I will never, ever EVER get my hair cut in a slong again. EVER.
Not that I need the note, but when certain people start talking to my hair, I need to remember to not succumb to the pressure of making a hair appointment. Fuck that shit. Like the song said "Almost cut my hair..."

30. I actually kind of like nightmares most of the time.
I've only had one in the past year that I didn't enjoy in the least bit. After finally watching Apocalypse Now all the way through with my SO, I had to get drunk. I was deeply disturbed by it, especially after seeing so many pictures of dead, wounded, crying and screaming Iraqi children on the web. After I passed out, I could see all of these children I saw in the pictures on the web and more that my imagination conjured up, crying and bleeding and screaming. I woke up screaming and crying hysterically.

Other than that, I enjoy nightmares. They make me think. I love to try to figure out the symbolism and why I would have them. The most recent one I had, I was walking down the street with my puppy. I started talking to someone who just kind of appeared, and was told my puppy had been taken by this woman my ex b/f's parents were friends with. So I ran after this car and got my puppy back, and kept walking down the street. And then that woman's husband jumped out of a car and had a gun and told me if I stay there he will shoot me and spare my puppy. He was obviously very angry about me breaking up with my ex. So, I ran, I didn't want to get shot! Instead of shooting me, he was chasing me instead, through a neighborhood. I ran into a house, and lo and behold, my ex's parents were sitting there. I said, "this is an emergency I'm so sorry but someone's going to kill me." So they said, okay, <ex's name>'s room is down there. I went into my ex's room and locked the door behind me, and somehow my puppy was out of my arms and on his bed calmly staring at me. He looked up at me grimly and said, "You have a lot of explaining to do." I then woke up.

Why this dream stuck with me (I usually forget them after a day or two.) is because of what he said there at the end. When I left him (in real life), I had bought a plane ticket and moved to Indiana to be with someone else who would treat me right. I didn't tell my ex what I was doing or where I was going, he found out from my brother. Anyways, that dream scared the crap out of me, but at the same time, was very interesting to me.

48. I have anxiety dreams
ALL THE TIME.

Last night, I dreamed I was on a plane to Anchorage. There were all these people from my church on the plane. The plane had to land somewhere really remote because there was a problem, and I went into the airport and asked about flights to Nome from Anchorage, and they told me that a plane to Nome was missing and that's why we had landed.

I was thinking about birding, and suddenly I realized that I had forgotten my Birder's Guide to Alaska, which my colleague has borrowed IRL. I was sitting there feeling sort of irritated with myself, when I further realized that I had forgotten my field guide, and my scope, and my binoculars. The trip was totally ruined and pointless.

Not a nightmare, but just frustrating.

Have you been to Alaska IRL? My Sister and her husband are vacationing there now. I would love to go back for a visit. It's been 36 years since I was stationed there.
