38. Books of Blood seconded. Barker's short stories ( that's what BoB are)
are much better than his novels in my opinion. It's his real strength.

I'd also go with Stephen King's "Night Shift" an early book of short stories also. Some really awesome ones in there.

I read it last summer and still get creeped out thinking about certain parts from it.

Very well written (literary) *and* and it's horror/suspense. What more can you ask for?

27. I used to work in a rare-book store
We had a few of the first editions with all the full color plates and the multi-colored text to distinguish the narrators. I was always kind of fascinated by it simply due to that aspect; it's a very esthetically pleasing book.

It uses 4 different narrators at various points throughout -- all of which are wholly unreliable. I dig unreliable narrators.

13. "Dracula" by Bram Stoker, if you haven't already read it
It's written in an epistolary style and the horror really creeps up on you. Scarier than any movie version I've seen but probably somewhat blunted by our culture's familiarity with the subject.

21. Good one. But if you really wan't scary....
read Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change by William R Catton.

It discusses the upcoming death of 4.5 billion people...or more...and why the dieoff is probably unavoidable.

By the way...if you're under 60, you'll probably get to see it start.

44. Stephen King Suggestions, ranked by scariness:
Edited on Sun Jun-26-05 05:39 PM by Mayberry Machiavelli
1. The Shining (scariest)
2. 'Salem's Lot
3. Night Shift (short stories)

A lot of his best books, like Firestarter and the Dead Zone, are just great novels or thrillers and not really horror at all. Some, like "The Body" (novella in the "Different Seasons" book and made into the "Stand By Me" movie) or "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" are just straight up good fiction.

48. By the way, my favorite SCARY stories within Night Shift are:
Strawberry Spring
The Man Who Loved Flowers
Quitters, Inc.
The Boogeyman
Children of the Corn (forget about the crap movies)
I Am the Doorway
Graveyard Shift

Not all the stories are scary, some are straight fiction, some are just "different". So if you are in a bookstore, read one or two of the listed stories and decide whether you want the book.

Like "Night Surf" is just a cool apocalyptic story about the end of the world (predating "The Stand").

I found that Stephen King one scary as well as those on your list.

I also liked Rose Madder and Dolores Claiborne ... his "everday horror" genre, I like to call it. Although there is some supernatural in Rose Madder.
