Do you stereotype Hummer drivers?
Tell me about your stereotypes? Are Hummer drivers a certain race, age, income class, etc?

I know I'm guilty of it, but I want to hear what DUers think.

I'm sure that there are a few people out there with a genuine need for a monster truck, but most of them are just out to impress others. Burning all that fuel for fun is unpatriotic.

She takes my dad or little brother around most of the time.

But from what I've read on here, the shitty gas mileage is not the problem that most people on here have with the Hummer. It's the fact that it's so big and bulky, because there are hybrid SUVs on the market right now that get 30+ MPG.

I mean some people drive sports cars which only get maybe 16 mpg. What's the difference?

These idiots in the mega cars, cause more accidents. I don't think they should be able to park by driveways -- it makes it almost impossible to back out! You can't see around them. If they hit you and you're in anything less than an armored tank, you're dead.

Although most sports cars get better gas mileage than Hummers, sports cars aren't half as annoying.

I don't see anything patriotic about giving the Saudis and BushCo twice as much money as you have to, knowing what evil they do with it.

Most people in GENERAL are not of course but especially ones that drive expensive cars!! They were asking $5,000 over the sticker for the Prius which is why I couldn't get one. So I would say a fair amount of people with money got those, they were selling faster than they could stock them and WAY over sticker.

BushCo LOVES your Hummer!! They appreciate it...

But it doesn't really matter. I mean it's really my business I think, if I want to take 5 people in the car with me, or 1, or even carry no extra passengers. Like I said in the other post, lots of tiny sports cars with big engines get crappy mileage as well.

32. Oil is a finite resource
No doubt that SUVs use more than a Civic, but so do private planes, like the ones Kerry rode around in last year. Those use thousands of gallons of gas, but I didn't hear anyone complaining about that.

Of course the price of oil is going to go up as the supply of it drops.

71. Actually, most pot bought in the US is domestically grown
However, the bulk of the oil used by this country is imported from the middle east. But changing the subject is simply a way of avoiding the underlying point. If we didn't use so much fuel, we would not have such a desperate need for it. If we didn't have such a desperate need for it, we would not be embroiled in middle eastern affairs.

Sounds like mom's a bit of a dino.

I would recommend it. Yes, over 50% of our oil comes from the middle east; more comes from other areas of the world. I forget what the percentage is of domestically produced oil but it's shrinking every year.

Reread your post. Your mother's gas guzzler (and yours) are partially to blame for the war in Iraq. Deny it if you must...

I don't see why driving an Expedition implies that I want people to envy me, any more than a Democrat in LA buying a Porsche means that he wants people to envy him. I don't see my car as a status symbol. I work hard, and while I don't exactly live paycheck to paycheck, I am not rich either.

I hate the suburbanites here who drive those to work every day -- isn't the air in LA polluted enough for them?

Ed Begley Jr. is my parent's neighbor, and my personal hero. We even saw him on the subway in a tux -- we were also going to the same event and the only ones in the subway dressed up! OK everyone scream at me that they exist, I'm just sayin' Never seen one yet, and am looking for them! It is a matter of great curiosity to me, jerks in Hummers.

They had a fun event June 18th at the local Hummer dealer called "Hummers Are Bummers; Size Matters." This was at the Casa De Cadillac in Sherman Oaks -- 8 mile bike ride & festivities. I bought my little Saab wagon from the same dealer!

17. I think SUV drivers are unfairly stereotyped on this forum, often.
By a group I call "The Toyota Pious". Basically, it doesn't matter who or what that person is, if they're driving a full-sized SUV, they're an asshole.

I tend to disagree. Up until I lost it due to divorce, I drove an SUV. I often had 4+ psaaengers in is, used it to access off-road locations, and so forth. The 4x4 club I belong to does, among other things, trail cleanups to clear trails of the garbage of inconsiderate hikers, cyclists, etc, and we also take handicapped kids into the woods for camp-outs and stuff, to places where wheelchairs or special busses couldn't get.

But I have received anti SUV leaflets under my wipers, and been flipped-off on the highway.

It's like the SUV owner is the poster child for all things evil on the roads.

If you ask me, the real culprits are the kinds of people who may own a Honda Civic, but never, ever walk, cycle or bus anywhere... they'll jump in their car to go a block to the store.

And people who are just shitty drivers.

Honestly, if you're driving any kind of internal-combustion engined vehicle, you're part of the problem of global warming, pollution, dangerous environments, finite energy consumption, and community desocialisation; the kind of car you drive is only splitting hairs.

Income class -- not necessarily. It doesn't take much to go into debt because you really want something.

Race -- nope. Nor gender nor orientation. I did once see a rainbow flag on one.

Not even political party. I'm sure there are liberals who drive these things. See first paragraph and  along with me.

42. I'm just bothered by the fact that so many people
don't seem to care how much non-renewable energy they're using up. I don't really stereotype them by race, age or political background though you do have to have a certain amount of money to get a Hummer.

I had a boyfriend whose response to all this was, "well, they can afford the gas." That's not the point - it's just damn wasteful to drive a vehicle that gets such poor mileage. Not just Hummers, many of these vehicles and I include smaller vehicles with poor mileage.

Plenty of people who drive large vehicles have a legitimate reason. My hubby drives a Chevy Tahoe - he is a carpenter and needs a vehicle with enough room for his tools. He gets about 19 mpg which isn't horrible for that size vehicle but we use my car (30 to 35 mpg) to do errands and such because of the mileage factor. Not so much because of the money, though that is a factor, but because of the waste.

We're such a throwaway society. We seem to think that it's okay to consume and consume and consume. This is the only planet we have and even if it wasn't, it would be completely irresponsible to fill this one up with junk, strip it of all resources and then move on to the next one. We'd be like the aliens in Independence Day. Come to think of it, we kind of are.

75.  Hell yes, I do. I think they're all selfish pigs.
Sometimes I try to shoot a dirty look at the drivers, if I can. If we're side by side in at a stop light, I can't even see the driver from my little car. I'm especially sickened by the ones with bush stickers or support the troops ribbons. What bullshit, they're driving a colossal gas waster, just wasting it, while their hero little coward boy is frantically trying to round up whoever he can to go and die some more to get this shit from Iraq (and whoever's next) anyway. Hummer drivers are a finger in the eye to every person this country has sent to war to get oil. And these fuckers are just so willfully obvlious to it all, rolling thru town in their hummers shouting, demanding. "LOOK AT ME!!!!!"

So yeah, I stereotype them, but its almost obvious even without the stickers who these people are - who they almost surely are.. What other outlook on life could lead to buying someting like that and still support bush and his Iraq bloodbath for no valid official reasons, but one damn evident one?

And even if they're not bush/war supporters, the bloated ego that attempts to satisfy itself with absolute excess, and still someone I'd really not like to meet. But if I do, I hope its at a gas station and he/she's there to fill up, but hasn't started yet. I'd tell him I'm doing a news report on how much it costs to fill up a hummer. Then I'd put my wrist in front of me to stare at my wristwatch like some official whle we stood, and stood and stood. Then the final question would be, "why?"

Its got parallels to someone who'd wear a fur (unless absoluteley necessary). Something died for that. Something was put to death for that fur coat. People are dying. People are killing each other for that shit you toss around without a care, hummer driver.

114. My stereotype of Hummer drivers...
is about the same as my stereotype of Mustang drivers...I can't help but think "asshole". (And drivers of Hummers and Mustangs, at least in my part of the world, have, as a group, the worst road manners and greatest disregard for other vehicles on the road, so I have some basis for the stereotype).

Not to mention that it's ugly, ridiculously oversized for what it is, and hideously inefficient (you can get a vehicle that will transport the same number of passengers, with the same amount of cargo room, that goes twice as far on a gallon of gasoline).

As to age, race, and income class: Upper middle-class, white, mid-to-late forties (although not always; I've seen a few non-white people driving Hummers).

And not bright when making expensive purchases. Either they are worried they will get in an accident or that they will be seen as not having the most extravagant vehicle. It's a real vanity purchase.

I pity them, they're fools to be driving around in that ridiculous vehicle. Here's why it's ridiculous - Other SUVs hold as many if not more people, other SUVs have more cargo space, other SUVs have been proven more reliable, you can get a Mercedes, BMW or even a Porsche SUV for cryin out loud - if you need the braggin' rights...and yes, other SUVs get better gas mileage - it is just a poor choice of expensive vehicle.

I live in exurbia - the land of SUVs - I drive an Infiniti M45 - not exactly green (I get 21 miles a gallon combined), but fun and reliable, I suppose an SUV has a better image than a minivan - we used to have a Toyota Sienna mini-van, we now have a VW Passat Station Wagon that gets only about 20 miles a gallon. I understand the desire to have three rows of seats, I understand the desire to seat 7. It's just that the Hummer is the worst choice on the market to achieve these goals. Very few Hummers where I live, it's just not a smart choice, most SUVs around here are Toyotas, Jeeps, Beemers, Benzes and Fords......

As far as other SUVs go, many of them have the "Support the Troops" ribbons, the irony lost on them.

I remember one time in particular where the Expedition in front of me had a "Never Forget" mural on their rear windshield depicting the Twin Towers, etc., along with a sticker mentioning they belonged to the NYPD.

These assholes can't buy a friend I guess?? It's not stupid looking enough to be driving around in an ostentatious army tank, you have to be ALONE in it too?

I saw a guy trying to park one of these once around the Bev Center it was major LOL time....

132. Hey, there's no money left to buy a friend
when you're paying $100 to fill up the Dickmobile.

127. White, Good Credit, Contempt for the Planet, and "penis issues"...
And they vote for Chimpy McCokespoon, too.
And what REALLY pisses me off about them is when they have the name of a business on the window in die-cut vinyl letters, like "Bambi's Balloon Bouquets", or "Ace Accounting"..

What, you need an assault vehicle to carry that turbocharged Addler?

I feel like going up to one of hese limp-dicks and saying "Can I take your Humma for a ride? No? Why not? With the tax write-off you got leasing this for your 'business', I fucking helped PAY FOR IT!!!!"

128. I do think Hummer's are excessive..
I try not to be too judgmental over what people are driving..people drive what they can afford, what they're comfortable in, what fits their lifestyle. If they want to shell out the $$ for a vehicle that many would call unattractive and the $$ for the gas it takes to get them from pt A to pt B..then I don't it's smart at all and they obviously don't have very much environmental regard, but all the foolish things we do as a society are relative right?
Some people work further away from home than would be the ideologically pure thing to do, some people go cruising in their vehicles without errand or purpose, some people never walk anywhere..

I drive a small SUV and I'll tell you why I do--I learned how to drive and spent my first years driving on a small truck (my small SUV gets 16 mpg and the truck also gets 16 mpg though the drivers of trucks never seem to recieve the same amount of criticism as the SUV drivers?) The feel of the SUV is similar to that of the small truck that I am used to driving..therefore I am comfortable driving in it and feel that I drive safer because of this comfort level. Though, this is the lowest mpg vehicle that I'd ever be willing to drive and I am lusting over someday being able to own a hybrid-version.

129. Pathetic types who don't even realize that most people think that...
they are compensating for low self-esteem or a tiny penis.
As contemptible as they are, we are expecting the impossible of them. How can anyone expect the socially retarded to have a social conscience?

134. I always wonder why you need an assualt vehicle to
drive down a paved road. How often do you think those things actually hit the dirt?

139. Sometimes I do
Edited on Sun Jun-26-05 11:38 AM by Rob H.
But most of the times I've seen anyone driving a Hummer (around here, anyway), there's often at least one of those square, black "W: The President" or white, oval "Bush/Cheney 04" decals on the back, so my first instinct is usually proven correct. The really mind-boggling thing, as some others have noted here, is that much of the time there's only one person in the car!

Full disclaimer: I bought a Jeep Wrangler way back in '91, before SUVs took over America, and it gets 17 city/20 highway. It still runs like a top and has close to 190,000 miles on it--my dad has had it for the past ten years and usually uses it as his hunting/fishing vehicle. My current car gets 26 city/30-31 highway, and I'm looking at buying a scooter this year partially because the one I'm looking at gets around 55-60mpg, iirc, and partially because I've loved motorcycles for a long time but never actually owned one.
