and the need to build a body of work, local stations are the only place to start. It's easier to be a big fish in a small pond and hope someone notices them.
most of the well known faces started out locally. O'Reilly was on a local MA station many moons ago. Matt Lauer got his start in Huntington, WV. It's not just news anchor positions that could be possibilities for someone with a portfolio from a local station. There are reporter positions that can be a step in the chain, news/tabloid shows too that can generate a bit of fame (or infamy) while waiting for that big break. There's the opportunity to have your own talk show (Oprah ring a bell?).
Exposure is the key and resume building/body of work is the goal. It does happen. Some of these people do get SEEN on the local stations and get offers.
