vmware users, heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!!!
I'm glad this is an eval edition, but so far "win4lin" has the ease-of-use factor, even if it's limited to Win9x/ME...

I tried installing via the SuSE-specific RPM, but after telling it which directory contains the C compiler code (using vmware-config.pl logged in as root), it comes back saying that my kernel (2.40.00-4GB-Athlon) does not match the specified kernel (2.40.00) - so even if it compiled, it would not work.

How do I trick the bloody thing into working, I shouldn't be penalized because of using a better processing unit!!

Thanks!

1. what kernel-source package do you have installed?
are you sure that it's 2.40? I have something like 2.4.21 on mandrake.

3. Definitely
I haven't even done the Yast Online Update yet...

Definitely 2.40... I should get 2.4.21 eventually... but right now I just want to get everything up and smurfy! :-)

5. You might as well upgrade then try to get vmware working
you'll have to recompile as soon as you upgrade kernel versions.

2. Why are you using those instead of WINE?
Just started with SuSE, and haven't gotten deep into Windows apps yet. What do they offer that WINE doesn't?

4. vmware emulates a whole PC
Wine just emulates part of the Win32 API used by Windows applications. WineX also needs to be installed (and bought) to use DirectX games, though WineX isn't perfect either.

Compatibility under vmware is going to be greater, though it'll run a little slower... not that I would play games using vmware as, even if it did work, it would run slooow.

Besides, I love emulators. :-) Technically I don't really need vmware, but if I am to support Linux workstations someday, all the knowledge I can accrue would be good.

Win4lin is great, but doomed unless they get WinNT technology integrated. Microsoft is discontinuing Win98 support and they act as if ME never existed; especially since their newest Office version (ver. 11) runs on XP and 2k ONLY. No WinME or NT 4 support. Force the sheep to buy to keep them rich while they develop new methods to lock the people in (like Palladium and the TCPA).
