No such thing as a chemical imbalance, according to T. Cruise
:wtf:
I was watching NBC last night, and they continually showed the excerpt of the Tom Cruise interview... (was this with Matt Lauer?)
Where Cruise says something to the affect of his being well informed on psychiatry and the interviewer was not...

Since when is he an expert on mental health, chemical imbalances and psychiatry? :silly:

Isn't he doing people like manic depressives a HUGE disservice?

BTW, I know we are ALL sick of Mr. Cruise and his blatant attempts at garnering some attention.

1. Yes, ironic, isn't it?
At least with a little luck maybe his star will fade now and he won't make so many movies.

4. Yes, he is doing a disservice...
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 12:40 PM by Hell Hath No Fury
Too many folks here have applauded Cruise for calling out "Big Pharma" for the overuse/prescription of medications for mental health, when what Cruise was doing was saying there is absolutely no appropriate case for those meds or for psychiatric services of any kind. Matt was just trying to get him to concede that there are instances when medications may be beneficial.

What Cruise was promoting is frankly dangerous and needs to be vigorously challenged.

10. I'm sure someone like Patti Duke may have some words for him
on this issue.

Discovering her chemical imbalance dramatically changed her life, for the better. In fact she says meds SAVED her life.

I also believe the pharmaceutical industry is out of control, but there are people that NEED meds...manic depressives, schizophrenics, etc. to function and be ok.

16. There but for the grace of Allah go I
I was just hospitalized for my recurrent depression. If not for my medications, I would have killed myself years ago.

If Tom Cruise doesn't like psychiatry, then he doesn't have to go to a psychiatrist. If he feels he can get the same effect from a glorified electrometer and getting "clear", more power to him.

Just leave the rest of us alone, mmmmmKay?

29. Thanks, that's very kind of you
Thanks for your kind words! It's been a rough few weeks. On May 12, my wife of 9 years told me my marriage was over-- completely out of the blue. I'd been down for a long time (last major episode was right after I got married), and this revelation pushed me over the edge.

Thankfully, after a week in the hospital, a couple med changes and continuing ongoing counselling, things are looking up. I'm actually looking forward to moving on with my life. I'll be getting a nice sum from the sale of my house, so I'll have a little financial security in my life. I've got a lot of really good friends who've been very supportive and have helped me out immensely.

Even in the last six weeks, life has gotten a lot better. I'm back at work full-time, I've lost over 20 lbs, and people I haven't seen in months barely recognise me-- the physical change has been that drastic. Life is getting better by leaps and bounds.

And no "body thetans" or evil galactic overlords to get me down, either! :P

Dude needs to take a look at the deaths of mothers and their children in Texas--how many of those women that killed themselves and their children were post-partum? (I know we've talked about some of those headlines here on DU)

17. Yes - and Brooke Shields responded
Brooke Shields is now speaking out in response to Tom Cruise’s comments about her use of anti-depressants to treat post-partum depression. Cruise told the TV show Access Hollywood that Shields’ use of medication is dangerous, and damaging to her career. He said that he believes vitamins are the answer, not drugs.

Brooke Shields has responded by saying “Tom Cruise’s comments are irresponsible and dangerous. Tom should stick to saving the world from aliens and let women who are experiencing postpartum depression decide what treatment options are best for them.” Shields was referring to Cruise’s upcoming alien movie, War of the Worlds, and not his belief in the teachings of Scientology.

every chance they could. I don't get why the networks substitute all this celebrity BS for actual news...it's so annoying!

Oh and I know, all I have to do is turn OFF the tv--and I should have.

In my own defense I had it on as background noise more than anything else while I was on-line last night...

To make up for it, today I haven't turned it on at all. It really wears on you after a while--all the inane crap they put on as a sub for news...

19. I think he's doing a disservice to manic depressives who are dumb enough
to take medical advice from Tom Cruise.

I think he's got a right to have his own whacked out opinion on how the world works, as do we all. I don't believe in black holes, after all. But why anyone pays attention to his opinions on mental health and other issues is another matter.

38. I think Mr Cruise has cofused being a
Scientologist with being a real scientist. The sooner he is disavowed of this notion the better off we all will be.

He clearly does not know history. He calls psychiatry the Nazi science and the Nazis called it the Jewish science. He also must not know that Mr Freud, recognized as the father of psychology, was Jewish.
