Liberal Yuppie Rant
OK...I admit. I'm a Yuppie. A liberal Yuppie. A Liberal Democrat Yuppie.

I drive a Prius, and I can't stop talking about it. It's a fine car and it gets 50 MPG, which is over five times more than your Ford Expa-whatever it is.

I like fine wine, and good beer. I don't drink "Bud" or "Coors" not just because they're owned by racist right wing nuts, but simply because the beer is awful. Bongwater is meant to be poured down the drain, not carbonated and chilled.

I also won't drink White Zinfandel. Save the pink lemonade for the country fair, I'll drink something with a bold character and robust flavor, OK?

I think television, by and large, is assenine. I think the people who are on it are stupid and need to be weeded out of the gene pool. By chance I watched some vacuous show called "Dog eat Dog." The basic gist of the show seemed to be getting beautiful people wet and asking them questions. When one trallop was asked "who served both as president and vice president without being elected to either position?" she answered "Colin Powell." What. The. Fuck.

I prefer jazz to pop, and think John Coltrane did more to influence music than Elvis. I also detest how much of America's youth would have no idea who John Coltrane or Elvis were.

I live in the bay area in California. I like it here. Yes my home is outrageously priced. Everyone's is. We live with that here, like we do with Earthquakes and the Oakland Raiders. We just deal. Asking us to leave our homes for that would be tantamount to asking a Texan to leave because of the rattlesnakes.

I have a Master's degree. It does not prove that I'm smart - I need no proof for that. The fact that I voted for Kerry last time is proof enough for me.

And I admit it - I'm a Liberal Yuppie. Hear me peal.

1. Okay triangulating... ... I've got him boss.... okay fire the missiles
:nuke:

That sounds a lot like me except I love TV, took ten years to get through college, like the recipe but when I do drink beer it tends to be of the Budweiser kind, hate most jazz (I know who Coltrane is but have never ventured to listen) but love pop/rock music, I live inland, and I drive an old pickup.

I don't drive a Prius, no longer live in the Bay Area, have yet to get a master's degree, and I find yuppies excruciatingly irritating and obnoxiously smug, for the most part. Other than that, the rest of what you wrote applies to me...life is too short to drink bad liquor or listen to bad music, and television is a useless and pointless pastime for morons who are too lazy to read or do something that involves getting the hell off of the couch.

Oh, and it's "asinine".

Not sure about their politics, but I drink Bud. I can't stand any beer besides a solid Lager or Pilsner. I used to love Guinness when I smoked but since I quit smoking I don't seem to like it anymore.

It's ok, but if I could afford it I would drink Carlsberg on a more regular basis and Budweiser on a less regular basis.

It's ok, good if you want to go on a bender. It's also not as cheap as it used to be.

I'm sick of hearing PA natives who think it's the best thing since they figured out how to slice bread and make cheesesteaks. I have friends from Philly that won't drink anything else.

Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 03:49 PM by youspeakmylanguage
...not many in Charlotte - it's a real corporate town, so we like our corporate beer.

I went to college in the NC mountains and right off of the main street in Boone, NC there was an INCREDIBLE microbrewery - Cottonwood. They made the tastiest beers I've ever had. It was expensive, but one pitcher would give you the best buzz. A few more would send you to the moon.

Sadly, they closed up shop and relocated somewhere else, apparently trying to "expand" into a regional brewery. They used to sell their "products" in grocery stores but I never bought their beers again. They might have gone out of business. They betrayed us after many years of support.

71. If you're talking about Boone...
...that wasn't a brewery. When I was there (1996-2000) it was a bar catering to the greek (as in frats and sororities) community - I can't remember what it was called - something about penguins and ice. Cottonwood was off of Howard(?) street - it ran parallel to King Street. Near where Mike & Willie's used to be.

Ah, Mike & Willie's. That brings back some memories...

I was there just before you (91-95) and I don't really remember anything about penguins and ice.

I used to live in the apartments basically just above there (and above the laundromat around the corner).

I even remember when the McDonalds was close to campus - before the Alumni building took over that spot - and when they added the 2nd story to the Wendy's.

Was Fuji Futons still there? The abnormal psych prof ran that place... "Art"

I don't remember a Fuji Futons. I think the alumni center was there when I got there as well. The second story was also on the Wendy's.

Sad: The Caribbean closed down a few years ago. A friend of mine almost started crying when he walked up and found the storefront boarded up.

The best beer in America might possibly Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Or another pale ale called The Bitter End, made in Illinois.

Worldwide it's Pilsner Urquell. Do not disagree.

I just had to. You have forgotten Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout! Or John Smith's Real Cask Ale. (Course, we can't get the latter here in the states.)

And, Sierra Nevada's Porter is De-Lish! I ain't really disagreein' about the Pale Ale. It's just not THE best. It's just really good!

Now, Pilsner Urquell. We just must have words.

74. pilsner?

what is it with the pilsners?

I never liked them much at all. Is it the heat down there or something? give me a pale ale, a red, a porter, a brown, a dark lager, just about anything with some body to it. That 'gnat piss' (to quote eric idle) that passes for big domestic beer in this country is crap, except for bud which is 'weak gnat piss'.

an urquell is nice on a really hot day, but so is an iced tea.

just a personal preference from a new englander, I understand many people really love the stuff, I just believe beer is malt, hops, water, and yeast. rice and corn are not supposed to be in beer (bud, miller, etc are full of both).

I work with a girl who is sold on the 80's prep style. She wears white polo shirts, collar turned up, and a blue Ralph Lauren sweater tied around the neck. The style just does something - not sure what, but man! Heads turn.

43. Well, you inferior........
I am not a Yuppie, I'm satisfied that I have moved upwardly enough thank you.....

I get invitations from Bill Frist to shell out $5,000 a year so he and some other Republican Congressmen can kiss my ass and ask for more donations - the invites are based on my zip code. I am SO Republican on paper, and not the stupid sucker kind, I am one of the people that really does benefit PERSONALLY from fucking everyone else over. You know, the kind of Repuke that doesn't have ANY stickers on his car....

I have a Doctorate in Computer Science, that doesn't prove I'm smart - but it certainly helps one earn more per hour of effort, and I guess that's smart...... I imagine my home is more expensive than yours. I drive an Infiniti M45 that gets half the mileage you do - but, since I work from my home office, I don't have to drive it much - but when I do, I have a lot of fun.

I come from Steel Workers and was born in Gary, Indiana. My Grandfathers were both Dropouts, but were able to succeed in the Steel Mills of Gary. My Dad was the first college graduate on his side of the family, I am the first College Graduate on my Mom's side of the family.

I watch Television - Mostly NFL and College Football, HBO, Pimp my Ride, The Daily Show and Sunday Night Animated Fox Shows. I spewed elitist shit about American Idol on DU and was promptly given an education about snottiness, lesson learned.....

Not only do I know who 'Trane is, I can tell you how Lester Young, Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins influenced him. I can also show you how 'Trane is quoted in more than one Jerry Garcia solo. I play Jazz, I play Rock, I play Pop, I sing Classical and I get paid for doing it.

I drink ice cold Bud and Rolling Rock when it's real hot outside and I've been working on the lawn and playing with my kids. I drink microbrews when I want to savor. I drink wine when I eat, and yes, I will drink a Fucking Merlot..... Mostly, I like Gin and Bourbon.

Now, have you been out-statused????

I really do love the Bay Area though.......

You're probably spending more than you need to as well. How much do you spend on sailing? Perhaps you could donate your boat to a tsunami victim...

Guilt - it's a two way street.

66. I don't sail and I don't own a boat...
He has detailed his conspicuous overspending. Other people need that money. They are starving.

70. Why do you have "sailing" listed as a hobby in your profile?
Edited on Tue Jun-28-05 09:44 AM by youspeakmylanguage
Are you sailing a plastic boat in your bathtub?

Other people need your money as well as mine. Just because he or I or anyone else chooses to spend some of their money on modest luxuries does not mean that we don't also donate to charity. Some of us actually, gasp, find pleasure in the limited frivolous spending we can afford.

If we didn't find pleasure in at least some of the money we earned, why should we continue to earn it? If I could be happy living on minimum wage, I'd be perfectly happy pushing a broom and listening to a Walkman for 8 hours a day and not have to deal with the stress that I deal with now. Of course, then I wouldn't have money to donate to Doctors Without Borders, NPR, UNICEF, Democratic Underground, etc...

I'm not advocating trickle-down economics, and I'm not advocating that the rich duck out on their fair share of taxes or limit their donations to charity. But you aren't going to win any converts to your brand of selflessness by force-feeding guilt on people who you think spend more money than they should.

69. I'm not a yuppie, but...
...I can relate to quite a bit here. I too detest television, mass-manufactured beer, and most of the plastic racket that passes for popular music these days. +1 on Coltrane, and don't forget Miles. :) I like good old-fashioned rock'n'roll, and progressive (art) rock and 60's R&B too. Classical turns my crank too, especially Bach...pure concentrated genius.

I can't afford the Prius, but that 50mpg figure has me drooling. :D I live near Madison...Dane County is pretty expensive property-wise, but I love the quality of life here.

Oh, and coffee needs to be properly drip-brewed or french-pressed. Percolators suck. :D

I'm glad I don't have cable...we mainly use the idiot box as a monitor for the DVD player. Rabbit ears are bad enough...one evening my wife and I stumbled across that show with Paris Hilton and some other dink in which they tried to work various jobs and live in other peoples' houses...their blithering stupidity was painful to behold!

75. yuppies are different here on the other coast.

yuppies Do drive ford exploders

yuppies do drink white zin (and michelob)

yuppies do watch TV, especially reality shows (like dog eat dog)

yuppies do prefer jazz to pop, but they think chuck mangione and john tesh are jazz.

yuppies are incredibly happy that their homes are overpriced because they can borrow against to buy more crap they don't need at filenes.

yuppies also shuttle their 2.3 kids around wherever they want to go and buy them whatever they want (and the yuppie neighbors kids have) because they don't want them to 'feel bad'.

I don't think you're a yuppie, oh, 'liberal' yuppies are rarer than a dells truck in february.
