Elementary Students Can't Get Report Cards Without Dental Checkup
<snip>

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Some grade school students will have to visit the dentist if they want to collect their end-of-year report cards, under an Illinois law that goes into effect Friday.

School officials already require students of certain ages to prove they've received vaccinations and general health screenings. But now students attending kindergarten, second and sixth grades would be required to undergo dental checkups.

The dentist and lawmaker who sponsored the measure said it's important to establish good hygiene habits that will save money in the long run and improve children's education.

3. Is that legal?
What does that have to do with their school work?

4. Is the school system
willing to pay for these checkups? I doubt it.

5. Who on the school staff...
...has the expertise to tell whether or not the "proof" is genuine? What dentist's office is going to share any information with them?

Stupid idea.

6. I'm in MD and we have to supply it in our school district...
I had to supply it when the kids started elementary school and also when my oldest started middle school. I can't remember if there were any times in between. There is actually a specific form that comes home, similar to the health questionaire and vaccination record forms. They all come home in an envelope and must be returned to school prior to the first day of school.

I just assumed that this was required everyplace.

8. Just went through it this past year with my granddaughter.
I thought it was a requirement every where too. My kids range from 26-30 and I remember having dental forms as well as the vaccination form.

7. On the other hand...
some poor children never see a dentist. They live with constant tooth pain and think it's "normal." Wish I could remember the book I read that talks about the schools in East St. Louis, one of the poorest towns in Illinois.

That said, who the heck is gonna pay for it? How will these parents afford a dental check up if they can't put enough food on the table?

9. There is no question that children should go to the dentist
and it is IMO a form of child neglect if they don't go, but it doesn't seem right for the school to hold out until they see proof.
