800 mile road trip tommorow-HELP!!!!!
I hate to drive long distance- almost as much as I hate going by airline. I am commited to this due to my family wanting to see me. What can I do to make this drive more enjoyable? I am doing it in one shot-no overnights at a hotel. The worst thing is I have to drive across Ohio! From Cinncy to columbus it is so flat and barren that it sucks the life out of me! (They did catch the columbus interstate sniper though- that removes some of the excitement)
What do you do on long roadtrips to pass the time? (I am going solo)

1. Great music is a must!...
Take stuff you can sing along with. :)

Or get a book on cd. Or both.

2. the highways in Ohio are pretty good and well marked
I listen to books on tape or CD while I drive ... the miles pass quickly that way.

Just floor it, and when there's a cop nearby, slow down to the speed limit.

5. i like to take alternative routes
get off insterstate. i plotted the straitest line possible to miami from milwaukee, but due to BAD signs in georgie, had to get back to interstates.
how long is that. i drove Milwaukee to charlottesville in one fell swoop. 17 hours. i just had good music. and lots of snacks.
indiana sucks. and go through chicago at insane hours. 4am.

7. Variety of music, CB radio.
I vary my sonic surroundings on long trips.

I bring a variety of music. I intentionally include stuff I think is old or crappy. When I'm bored I often find that's more entertaining than stuff I like and have listened to a thousand times.

I bring along a CB. Hearing live, human voices is invigorating. You'll find truckers have a variety of opinions, so you'll be hearing a slice of Americana. Plus, you'll often get advanced warning about speed traps, bad traffic, and weather.

I also scan for local radio stations. You can often get a sense of the character of a city as you drive through, just by hearing what's in their airwaves.

And finally, I often just shut off all the noisemakers, roll down the windows, and listen to the road.

Love long road trips.
