Help me choose some dub/rock steady reggae.
When I was a kid in Britain in the 70s, I remember hearing reggae coming out of the speakers all the time. I'd like to get some of that stuff, but I don't know what to buy. I don't want the typical Marley/Tosh/Cliff stuff. I'm more interested in the Junior Mervin stuff and others like that. Basically, the stuff that inspired The Clash and The Police.

Any suggestions?

2. I've actually heard of him...
I like the real bass-heavy stuff. I guess that would be 'dub,' yes? I'm not sure I know my roots from dub from dancehall from rock steady. All I know is, I like eighties two-tone bands and bands like the Clash, and I'd like to hear the original artists that inspired them.

4. second Tubby
King Tubby's "Controls" by Tubby and the Aggrovators, plus some of the Scientist stuff. They got re-released on the same labels.

Ask me about 80s stuff - I was only born in '73.

Laters.

5. I was born in '69.
I got on this jag after watching the Clash documentary Westway to the World. After listening to High Life stuff in Nigeria as a small boy, I loved the reggae in London in 1977. I was turned off it for a long time after hearing frat boys play Bob Marley's "Legend" album one too many times in college.

6. was going to say Legend for a joke
I had a theory that Marley must be crap because you could be at a party full punks, goths, rastas and b-boys and that was the one thing no one would object to.

These days I'm not so polemical. His lyrics do stick in your head.

9. Mikal Rose; (or is it Michael?); BURNING SPEAR!; and....
there is a FANTASTIC multi-CD anthology of Bob Marley -- it's incredible -- stuff from his earliest days to his final days. Incredible.

13. Second on Black Uhuru
For dub-b-b-b-b... Black Uhuru and Linton Kwesi Johnson. And sometimes, a little Bill Laswell can be weird.

For 'rock steady/ska', stuff like The Specials, and a kind of hard to find band called "The Selector" was probably the best British reggae/ska band I ever heard.

Older sound (roots to rocker): Augustus Pablo sounds about the same today as he did 20 years ago. Toots and the Maytals is also a good older band that's still out there. Toots gets a little ska-like at times.
