So, my wife had a funny freeper customer service story....

My wife works in a major city at one of the bigger hotel chains. She ends up handling a lot of the complaints that came in. Today she got the funniest one I have ever heard. It seems that a woman was staying in the room with her 12-year-old daughter. Like all hotels, a selction of magazines are available in the room, including the one that shares its name with the city, i.e. "New York Magazine". The woman let her daughter read that one because, since it had hot dogs on the cover, she figured it must be an "All-American" kind of magazines.

This particular issue, however, had an article about masterbation. This is where the complaint comes in: the woman had shielded her daughter from this particular topic all her life, to the point of keeping her out of health class to avoid it, and now, thanks to the hotel (or so she said), the cat was out of the bag, so to speak.

She demanded to know what the hotel was going to do about it and wants a written action plan by the end of the week.

I swear I am not making this up.

The mother would faint if she knew everything her 12 yr old daughter knows. Take that from the father of a 12 year old girl! This daughter will rebel against her mother very soon now.

this kid is homeschooled. Probably hasn't been allowed out of sight of the parent in her lifetime.

If I were hotel management, I would get a local physician to come in
(cost would probably be equal to a home visit -- about $150--) and
meet the woman to discuss. Hotel management is not in a position to
produce any sort of action plan because this is nothing but a medical
issue.

Ideally, a Pediatrician. Masturbation is harmless and has nothing
to do with future sexuality or marriage. Hopefully, after talking
with a doctor, that should be the end of it.

It is clear that this woman is a nut of some kind. The hotel has
absolutely no liability in this, since we have freedom of speech laws
in this country and magazines can print whatever they like as long as
whatever they print is truthful.

This is one of the chief problems with homeschooling. These type of
parents tell their children lies and expect the rest of the world to
reinforce those lies.

She must be curious now...

She's the one who failed to protect her daughter by neglecting to read the magazine first. If she can't be bothered to read every magazine, book and newspaper and preview every TV show and movie her daughter sees, she just doesn't deserve to have a daughter, that's all. I think the girl should be taken away from the mother and given to people better equipped to care for her. The mother is obviously unfit.

I believe her name is Carrie if I'm not mistaken.

What's scary is that I've known some people like Carrie's mother: completely whacked out religious folk.

advice on sending that woman to a shrink. She has serious issues and clearly is not ready to handle a soon-to-be teenage daughter.

Remind the woman that it is her job to monitor her child's reading and that she should have taken the responsibility to read the article ahead of time, if she really cared that much. Explain that the hotel offers magazines and television, with the understanding that adults can control their own behavior and monitor their own child's activities. The hotel must have thousands of people move through each year and it is impossible to predict what will offend any particular person. It is not the hotel's responsibility to come up with an "action plan." It's hers.

a most appropriate smackdown for the Freeper-type willing to abdicate the responsibility for her bizarre form of parenting to the reading selection in a public lobby.

And I would also make sure she is told "If you decide not to stay with us again, we will of course miss your business."

This is customer service-speak for "you can take your money elsewhere" and "the matter is closed." :)

If this lady's demanding a written action plan, then in her mind the debate was over (if she even thought there was one). Instead of two people with differing opinions trying to work toward a compromise to solve a problem, she already decided the only acceptable resolution was for the other party to completely kowtow to her viewpoint, in writing no less. Its as if she didn't even stop to consider that there are people in the world who don't share her God fearin' views on such potent evils as self-diddling.

Kind of explains how the current Administration got in the mess its in, doesn't it?

There's a certain entitlement mentality that strikes many people once they have given birth, and suddenly everyone else one earth is responsible for their litttle precious. Everyone, that is, except for the parents themselves. :puke:

"I've kept my daughter safe from GOP propoganda for twelve years, and now, thanks to your hotel, she's been exposed to The O'Reilly Factor! That was six hours ago and she's still gagging! I want MAJOR financial compensation and I want it now!!"

....masterbation as well as a few things the mother still has no idea her daughter is up to date on. So at 12 years old the mother should be planning a "birds and the bees" conversation, complete with a question and answer session.

"Madam, if you reading material is unnaceptable to you, please notify us, in writing, one week before your next stay. We will be happy to remove all material from your room."
