Just finished getting that dock rebuilt a month ago.
Don't have to worry about the boat any more.
Ivan got that, too.

Ivan hit on Sept. 16, 2004, a day that will live in infamy.
I finally got a landscaper to come out last week. We had 19 oaks blown over. Roots and all. The yard looks like it's undergone a three-hour mortar attack. Huge craters. He was going to get started this morning.
I called him last night.
"Never mind. We'll wait and see what's left after Dennis."

Brought in all the hanging doo-dads, wind chimes, sun catchers, etc.
The solar path lights are in a box in the garage.

Anything that was a potential missile; flowerpots, leftover lumber from the dock repair, shovels, rakes, hoes, birdbath, bird feeding stations are in the garden shed.

I put an ice cube in a baggy in the freezer. When we get back, if that cube ain't still cube-like, well...we'll know to dump the freezer contents.

Tomorrow morning (early) we get the shutters out and put them up.
Check the latest on Dennis. It's Cat. 3 now. Expected to go 4 tonight-tomorrow, after it passes Cuba and hits the warm, open waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Last minute: trip the breaker on the well pump and turn off the main shut-off valve. Turn off the city water at the meter near the street.

Destination: Boston
No half-measures here. If you're gettin' out of Dodge, get way-the-hell out of Dodge. Haven't seen my daughter, son-in-law, and 3 year old Jack since their March visit. He's growing like a weed.

This shit is getting waaaayyyy old.

Anybody want a pretty nice house on beautiful Wolf Bay?

Just 5 miles from the famous Tanger Outlet Mall?

20 minutes from Billy's Seafood.

Make me an offer.

1. Good Luck and Stay Safe...
You'll be in my thoughts.

i've really been out of the loop with this one. It took me by surprised when I heard how powerful it had become in such a short period of time.

Great idea about the ice cube, by the way.

2. Update...krep!
Mandatory evac for everyone south of Hwy. 98 effective Sat. a.m.
That would be me.
I was going anyway, but the traffic on I-65 will be standstill.
Getting the "good" maps out for county roads, back roads.

3. Good luck to you and your stuff. We've been lucky here in
the Tampa Bay area but one of these days that luck is going to run out. Your ice cube in a baggie is a clever idea which I will file away for my own use.

4. I was going to ask you about the landscaping
Hey, you just (temporarily) saved yourself some money. Hope the storm passes you by with just a wee bit of rain and some weak winds (eternal optimist, aren't I?).

8. We would be EXTREMELY ripe for a meetup.
I used to have Matcom's number, but can't find it.
Could you pm me with yours?
I could sure use some fellowship with like-minded friends.
BTW, my daughter and her family are with us.
You'd like them.

12. I didn't get jaque-shid from FEMA.
Their website says they "can" pay deductibles.
I'm a poor summitch, but not (I guess) poor enough.

And more rant:
Homeowner's/flood insurance doesn't pay one damn dime for debris clean up. See 19 oaks, dock, above.

$4000 debris removal, and cheap at the price.
A friend (contractor) did it for the labor cost only. No charge for the heavy equipment he had to use.
$6000 for bulkhead (waterfront) repair.
nada
bastids

That area of the country is lovely, but it comes at a price. I think I'll stay here. :)

11. We can't tie down things with earthquakes or mudslides here
I've been at sea and on land during those force 10 storms

what scared me was the sound...

although the 6.5 quake near me did make a sound also..

good luck but I can't make an offer yet.

13. Is there any place in the U.S.?

That doesn't have catastrophic weather?
Like Arizona or New Mexico?
I could deal with the heat.
Heat won't annihilate your home.

15. Oh, yeah. Did I mention the plumbing?
See, when the heavy (we're talkin' HEV-VEE) equipment ran all over the front and back yards, haulin' out all those oak trees, and stumps, and 8 foot wide root balls...see...EVERY TIME they rolled over a water pipe...two feet down in the earth...they cracked the pipes.

You wanna just guess how much time and money it took to excavate all those leaks and repair them?

Insurance coverage?
Nooooooo.

And the sidewalks?
I watched them flex, every time the backhoe ran across them.
Now?
Rubble.

I'm still taking offers.
