1. Jeez. I think the question today is "Is it safe to go into the lounge"?
What a weird night.

24. It's not supposed to be safe.
Democracy is messy, ugly, and inconvenient. I don't mean to be offensive, but anyone wanting unanimity of opinion should try the freeper boards.

Be glad that there is vigorous disagreement. Treasure the flames and insults, as long as they don't turn threatening. Big Money makes all the right-wingers sound alike. Let's not wish that upon ourselves.

Not saying that you're demanding unanimity.

I just like to celebrate diversity, untidy as it is.

so I'll look forward to seeing you again.

my first days at DU were spent lurking in GD and a few other forums ... but most of my time these days - I'm thinking about building windmills ... ~ if you're not part of the solution ... you're part of the problem ~

6. I go there all the time. I'm OK, You're OK. This WILL help the meek!
When I see these threads in The Lounge, and they do amuse me, I'm reminded of the people in Northern Virginia who sit in the burbs and say, "God, I never go in to DC" like they're going to get assaulted or something. Well, they are if they go in to buy crack but otherwise, DC's a very safe city (almost all crime is drug related).

So.....you guessed it, (I'll type slowly):

Unless you're going into GD to buy crack, everything will be all right, it's very safe over there.

Since I've provided the definitive answer to this question, I expect that this WILL be the last quivering, "Oh, is GD safe" thread for at least 48 hours...

11. The fear of GD isn't so much like the fear of crime in a perceived...
urban jungle, but rather like the fear of a house where there are raucous parties at which people drink too much Pabst Blue Ribbon and play air guitar to Foreigner. ( :headbang: Hot blooded! Check it and see! Got a fever of 103! :headbang: ) I'm not so much worried for my safety as I am my fragile concept of human dignity.

26. I'm aware of that.
But I think the Lounge can claim the high ground because we don't take ourselves seriously, unlike the tinfoil hat crowd or the ideological purists that sometimes take over GD. One can call us Lizards trite and silly, but there were 10 times as many threads in GD exploring the nuances of Bush falling off his bike than there were in the Lounge.

Out of fairness, I must concede that I usually enjoy GD. It's great to have a place to discuss and argue politics without some dickhead accusing me of being a communist for thinking it's wrong that there are children who don't have access to healthcare.

36. "Ideological purists"
What you mean by that is people willing to stop watching "Nick at Nite" long enough to participate in politics, or god forbid give up some of the creature comforts of having the whole day to ponder who had the best teeth in 1980s glam rock.

41. Nah, I mean the folks who do shit...
like demonize an elected official on the basis of a single roll call vote. (e.g "Russ Feingold voted for Ashcroft, he's a DINO!!!!!!1111") Or the folks who feel that if a Congressperson fails to agree with them on every single issue, they're a traitor to the cause. Or people who look for every opportunity to mindlessly bash the Democratic Party. The party has it's problems, but that "pink tutus" bullshit is fucking idiotic. If you think the silliness in the lounge is somehow inferior to this sort of nonsense, then you need to get over yourself.

Some dickhead will call you a Freeper for thinking parents might be slightly responsible for obtaining access to healthcare for their children.

33. Hey, I thought it was kinda fun, too. It's a real hoot to see some of
the ridiculous things that people REALLY believe in, to the point that they'll argue until they're blue in the face...my favorite was the one that said the number 2005 does not mean five more than two thousand, but actually means 7, in support of their attempt to make yesterday's date actually 7/7/7, which number I guess must mean something to someone...

Where else but GD can you get those kind of laughs on such an otherwise sad day?

Redstone

34. i go there, but i am clearly not progessive enough

and i don't have acceptable acceptance of gay people
and i am not non-discriminatory enough towards women
and i am not democratic enough for the democracy
and i do not do enough to stop people from not doing things
and my "to each his own" attitude, is in direct violation of the liberal ideas that people should be allowed to express their opinions honestly and openly.

i think its funny (or strange) that on a democratic, liberal, progressive website you can be attacked for not being liberal enough.
sorta oxymoronish.
