I want to grill salmon filets tonight, but the package is frozen rock hard.

Anyone want to suggest a safe way to thaw fish?

1. Put it in a freezer bag, seal the bag, place in sink and run hot
water over it until it defrosts. Should take about 10-15 minutes.

the freezer before I leave for work :)

18. Well for me it's usually already in freezer bags :)
I buy the chicken breasts in bulk and separate them in bags of two after I get home from Costco :)

The bag is kind of there by default :)

12. Thawing in hot water will put fish in the danger zone...
...cold water, always cold.

Here's how...
Thaw fish in its original wrappings in the refrigerator
or under cold running water. Never allow fish to thaw at
room temperature. Thaw fish only until it has just become
pliable. It may still have some ice crystals in it.

7. I've always been taught that hot water is fine for defrosting as long
as you plan on cooking right away.

Just not if you plan on cooking later because it leaves a more "friendly" environment for bacteria.

I agree with just until it's pliable :)

17. NEVER MIND. I'm going to the market to get some fresh fish.
I'm afraid now to thaw it quickly.

TTYL.

3. Is a vacuum packed filet? The individual packages from Costco take...
...about 20 minutes to thaw under running tap water.

9. Microwave?
I have a defrost option for fish on my microwave. Being the ADD'er that I am, I never, ever take anything out of the freezer in time to defrost it.

13. I don't have a defrost button for fish...
And I don't even like to defrost meat in my mic, because it makes it rubbery.

:(

Learn something new every day.

If I didn't defrost in the microwave, the kids would starve.

21. It's a really small microwave....
and it turns everything rubbery around the edge when I defrost. It's excellent for making popcorn, but that's about it. :(

20. I use cold water, not hot.
The first turkey I ever cooked for Thanksgiving had to be thawed the night before because I had no idea I was supposed to take it out to thaw it days in advance. I was frantic as I was having my family over to my house and I didn't want to serve turkey pot pies as the main course.

I called a friend of mine's mother and asked her what I should do. She told me to take the bird, put it in the tub and run the cold water down it's neck until it thawed.

That was not the first time I had a turkey in my tub, but it was the first time I had a headless, winged, frozen turkey in my tub.
