It just dawned on me.....
The reason so many run of the mill average ordinary conservatives think that the nation's higher education system is so librul is because almost everyone is considered a Librel Arts College or offers degrees in the Liberal Arts......

1. I don't think so.
The problem many conservatives have is that education encourages critical thinking and the making of distinctions. These higher mental functions are notably absent in most conservatives, who seem to lack functional frontal lobes.

not liberal as in trying to indoctrinate votes, but rather liberal as in being open minded, pro diversity, anti rascisim, equal rights, ect...

so in a word. Liberal.

ok, i somewhat disproved my own argument.

3. Ah Yes I type too fast....
But that is exactly what I mean....

They think any college that offers a liberal ARts degree must be a bastion of Librul thinking.....

I'm talking your basic Hannity or Rush listener....

4. yea, i get what your saying.
just by using the word 'liberal' they think its political indoctrination. because words only have one meaning this day and age... and of course all meanings are absolute. no exceptions.

7. That's what I truly believe....
Even here in Cleveland, the Conservatives view Cleveland State with suspicion when it is basically a business vocational school with a few good colleges thrown in for snicks and giggles.....

6. No, it has nothing to do with political liberalism.
Classical liberal education has nothing to do with political liberalism.

8. thats (kinda) what i said.
Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 03:39 AM by LastKnight
not liberal in a political respect. im currently attending a liberal arts college, they put alot of emphasis on diversity, ect ect ect. but thats more the individual professor's choice to teach i suppose. the liberal arts part of it is requireing certian number of credits from distribution areas such as math, science, writing, ect.

so yes, i mispoke, just using my own experience of a group of professors' choices with the college itself. once again im proving myself wrong. lol.

9. I teach history at the uni...
and I'm a liberal. As a rule, I don't indoctrinate in the classroom....however, when I'm doing a topic rooted in the 17th-20th centuries--and especially the late 20th century--it's difficult to develop a lecture that does not demonstrate my views.

How can one teach the civil rights movement, the history of feminism, or American Indian relations without expressing one's views. It's difficult. I tell ya.

:D :hi:

5. Yes. We've run into that with uni-vs-public skirmishes here.
The uneducated definitely think that.

Liberal arts in the context of the university system means curricula in a broad range of subjects, with focus on research and writing. Shared knowledge, liberal in scope.

Liberal anything has received a bad rep from the right...wonder how they'd feel if they knew that Jefferson was a proponent of liberalism.

10. These people are too stupid to realise...
that the US is a liberal democracy. They don't even know what the word MEANS. Most of them have never heard of Edmund Burke, or John Stuart Mill. They could stand to heed the words of Ludwig Wittgenstein: "Whereof one does not know, thereof one cannot speak."
