I have a pitbull
Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 12:47 PM by Modem Butterfly
I didn't even know it. You see, all this time, I thought I had a Shar-Pei. He's wrinkly, he has a little turned up tail, he has a bright blue tongue, he has the little tiny ears, and when we adopted him from the shelter, they told me he was a Shar-Pei.

Turns out we were wrong.

My folks are visiting, and I had to come into work for a few hours today, so my partner and my mother took our dogs out for a morning walk. One of our neighbors informed my mother that it's not safe to allow a Pitbull outside on a leash. My mother explained that he was a Shar-Pei, but our neighbor would have none of it. She knows a Pitbull when she sees one, and that dog has a big barrel chest and tiny ears and a broad muzzle so he MUST be a Pitbull and he MUST be dangerous. She was going to call the county.

My partner asked her if our other dog was dangerous too (she's a Chow). Our neighbor said that Huskies aren't dangerous. WTF? She's a bright red Chow dog, also with a big old blue tongue.

How are people that stupid allowed outside?

Edited for clarity.

Just curious.

3. I'm not even clear which neighbor this is
We're new to the neighborhood, and my partner was really irritated when he called to tell me about it. I'm going to head home in an hour or so once I've got some stuff sorted out, so I'll find out then. I live in Cobb County, GA, so it's extremely likely she has a W sticker.

5. Well, that makes you a criminal, dontcha know?
If you own an animal that anyone else considers intimidating, you must be a drug-dealer, a dog-fight organizer, a gang member or all of the above.

Only criminals like dogs with barrel chests, tiny ears and broad muzzles. And all such dogs MUST BE pitbulls (whatever THAT term means!).

You are a danger to humanity, turn yourself & your dog in IMMEDIATELY!

6. Your neighbor
sounds like a piece of work.

I say let her call whoever she wants, they'll come to find she doesn't know what she's talking about.

Not safe to let a pitbull outside "on a leash"??..even if the dog were a pitbull, if your mother had the dog controlled on a leash then I don't understand what the neighbor-lady's problem is..

9. I stopped by my local motorcycle shop today...
A lose pit bull was wandering aroung. They can be pretty nasty, but they aren't wrinkly.

12. Some 'peis are wrinklier than others
They mostly outgrow the wrinkles when they get to adult hood. Their wrinkles are mostly confined to the face and the haunches, which is the case of my dog, but they keep the loose skin, so getting a handle on them is rough.

Any loose dog is a hazard to himself and to others. Period.

10. I found my rescue mutt and I think he's pit and chow and ????

He is the sweetest dog, great w/ my other rescue pooches and cat. He is loyal and protects home and car. He is highly skeptical of strangers that come to the house, but is great in a park or community setting.

13. I was sure someone would freak over my Chow before my 'pei
My Chow is not friendly toward strangers, but she doesn't do much barking unless the strangers attempt to come into the house. My 'pei loves everybody. He was probably trying to lick the neighbor when she approached my mother.

14. Doesn't Shar Pei translate into English as Pit Bull?

Yes ma'am. It's a pit bull, but you should have seen how big he was before that stomach stapling surgery.

I could see mistaking a chow for a husky --in the dark!

19. Even if he was a pit that doesn't mean he's dangerous.
I've known pits that were the sweetest dogs ever. And even if he was dangerous, he's on a leash! He's not roaming around free to attack things.

20. I've had that happen before!
I took my two Boston Terriers to Port Aransas for a vacation. We were walking along the beach ( with leashes, mind you ) and this freaky woman with a small dog craddled in her arms starts SCREAMING...and I mean SCREAMING that " BULLDOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THE BEACH! "

Since my dogs are CLEARLY not bulldogs, I continue walking them until a police officer got out of his car and approached me to tell me that certain types of dogs were not allowed on the beach, leashed or not. I asked him what types of breeds are not allowed and the officer replied " Pitt bulls and bulldogs" So I explain that I am clearly in compliance since I have BOSTON TERRIERS!

Jeeeeezuz! The fucking nerve! If your gonna bitch about a dog breed, atleast know what the hell your talking about!
