33. So much hate... so little time
Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 02:11 PM by TlalocW
Genres:

Newer country. All the women sound alike, and all the men sound alike. The men are all overly-nasalish and overemphasizing "thar hick ack-sents." If someone mentions listening to country, it better be Johnny Cash.

Surf Rock ala Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, etc.

Country rock ala Skynyrd, Eagles, etc. If I wanted to listen to country music, I WOULD TURN TO A COUNTRY MUSIC STATION!

Songs:

Dust in the Wind, Hotel California, Stairway to Heaven, etc. All overplayed and overrated, and the only people I've run into that think they're "deep" were the stoners and drunks from my high school class, who are still in my small hometown of under 2000 people getting drunk or high every weekend and listening to these songs over and over.

41. There's too much to list.
Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 02:26 PM by Spider Jerusalem
Particular annoyances:

The relatively recent crop of bands (none of whose names I can think of at the moment) who all sound EXACTLY THE SAME, and whose singers ALL sound like they're doing their best impersonation of Morrisey with a bad head cold.

Just about any popular (ie not jazz or classical) female singer who's been labelled a "diva". Christ, are they annoying. Whitney, Celine, and the rest of you: do humanity a favour and have your vocal cords cut out.

Rush and the Grateful Dead. Sorry, but I just don't get it.

"Oi" punk. Best summed up by something I saw on another message board: "Oi! Because stupid people need music, too."

"Smooth jazz". Genuinely BAD, most of it (some is listenable, I admit), and whatever you want to call it, it's not jazz (r&b instrumental is a better label).

The genre of country music I think of as "Nashville pop"...syrupy, synthesised, overproduced tripe. Johnny Cash had the right attitude when he took out this ad in Billboard:

Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 02:25 PM by primate1
Is an insult to both music and photography. And as someone who dabbles in both, I think we need to fetch Celine and Anne's heads and put them on pikes for public display.

Now, as for what tortures my soul:

Simple plan (Oh, the irony of this image being hosted on a site called "truepunk.com")

55. mass marketed teen crap
sung by those who cannot sing. At all.

Really sexist rap/spawning sexist vids (although the sexist rock and metal don't get a pass either.)

anything with too much pitch changer - use the pipes God gave you, warts and all.

Most top 40.

Guys screaming until their vocal chords shred. Can't take it. Don't care. Luckily their voices won't last long.

Bland, pablum like jazz. Blander than pudding. Blech.
