Eight Simple Rules
I have never watched this show, but got talked into it now.

I am pleased that they left off the laugh track.

John was somebody that could have been great, but kept getting stuck in mediocre crap - except for movies sometimes. He was great in Slingblade.

What do you think of the way this show is going?

1. They didn't film in front of a live audience.
So that's why there's no track.

2. Yeah, but they could have canned it
I don't know about this, since I haven't watched it before, I'm tending to personalize the reactions instead of connecting it to John automatically. Maybe that's a good thing?

3. Please tell
me they are treating it with some dignity...no "another actor in same role" crap. In other words, did the father "die" on the show, and they are dealing with it?

I was about to start watching the show when poor Ritter died.

I like Katey Sagal.

4. No...they aren't replacing him.
They basically went through Paul Hennessey's death. It was heart wrenching. They said he collapsed in aisle three at the supermarket. Anyway, James Gardner is going to stay on for at least 4 episodes, may be more, to help Katey's character transition into single parenthood. It was a beautiful episode. At the end, James Gardner found his last column in a recycling bin. It was about his family and how no matter what they said or how much they insulted him, he knew an I love you wasn't far behind. It was a great send off.

7. Thanks. Sounds like some class
was involved, a rarity in H-wood nowadays.

5. no two Darrins for this show
I never watched it, and I really wish I had. I was so shocked when Ritter died. It was strangely sad. I'd never been an outspoken fan of his, but it's a big loss. I guess at least one old adage is true, and sometimes I won't know what's important to me 'til it's gone.

Anyway, no, there will be no new actor in the same role. They did a new episode where the dad has suddenly died. After that -- ?
